if the goal of "free software" is to give the user control over how the software behaves then is minecraft[1] more free than, say, gcc[2]? thread locked by moderators after reaching 100 pages of intense debate

[1]: where an end-user can usually install >100 mods with a lot changing the game in nontrivial ways reasonably trivially without major conflicts
[2]: where combining multiple features from different forks requires lengthy conflict resolution usually dependent on deep knowledge of the systems being modified

Ich bin nicht zu jung, um keine vernünftige Gesundheitsversorgung zu bekommen.

Ich bin nicht zu jung, um beim Arzt zu sitzen und zu hören:
„Sind Sie schwanger?“
„Haben Sie Ihre Tage?“
„Liegt es vielleicht daran?“

Ich bin nicht zu jung, um zu hören, dass Krankheiten an Frauen nicht richtig erforscht sind.
Ich bin nicht zu jung, um mit Problemen nach Hause zu gehen, für die ich nichts kann,
aber die ich trotzdem alleine lösen soll.

Ich bin nicht zu jung, um keine Hilfe zu bekommen, wenn ich sie brauche.
Ich bin nicht zu jung, um zu merken, wie Gelder gestrichen werden, während ich versuche, irgendwie klarzukommen.

Eine halbwegs bezahlbare Wohnung in einer halbwegs okayen Gegend ist inzwischen ein Traum.

Ich bin nicht zu jung, um im Kindergarten zu hören:

Als wäre Gewalt Zuneigung.
Als wäre das normal.

Ich bin nicht zu jung, um Schuldgefühle zu haben mich bei meinem eigenen Übergriff nicht adequat gewehrt zu haben, und dass Therapeuten mir das vorwerfen.

Ich bin nicht zu jung, um Angst vor Kriegen zu haben, die von machtgeilen Männern geführt werden.
Ich bin nicht zu jung, um die Konsequenzen davon zu tragen.

Ich bin nicht zu jung, um meine Zukunft zu fürchten.
Und die Zukunft von Kindern, die ich vielleicht nie haben werde.

Kann ich mir Kinder überhaupt leisten?
Sollte ich sie in diese Welt setzen?
In diese Wirtschaft?
In diese politische Lage?
In diese Klimakrise?

Ich bin nicht zu jung, um Angst zu haben.

Nicht vor Einzelfällen.
Sondern vor dem, was gerade passiert.

Vor dem Rechtsruck.
Vor Neonazis, die wieder laut werden.
Vor Menschen, die im Bundestag sitzen und so tun, als wäre das normal.
Als wäre das die Mitte.

Ich bin zu jung für Politik.

Aber ich bin nicht zu jung, um mich zu fürchten.

Und genau deshalb bin ich nicht ruhig. Deshalb werde ich kämpfen. Deshalb bin ich nicht zu jung. Niemand von uns ist das.

As I mentioned earlier, it's a bit more difficult to have good exit strategies with ruff, given that the specs around linting are much more loose. It's even harder to have a good exit strategy for ty, even though there's good specs, because there's not a great type checker to use instead¹.

¹As has been pointed out to me, mypy is, for all its strengths and weaknesses, not a type checker. It doesn't follow formal mathematical type checking rules, it follows linting heuristics.

So: an exit strategy relies on good specs and parallel tooling. For ruff, we have parallel tooling. For ty, we have good specs. For uv, we have both.

That only matters if we take that exit, but we're still in the kinda-sorta OK case to some approximate degree.

But what about the next time some infrastructure gets yoinked out from the Python ecosystem? How do we make sure we keep having good exit strategies?

That's when I get back to the first fact: AI is an attack on open source.
