In 1991, Linus Torvalds originally intended to name his creation "Freax" by combining "free," "freak," and "Unix." However, the server administrator who hosted the project, Ari Lemmke, hated the name and instead labeled the directory on the FTP server "linux" without asking.

@itsfossIt's FOSS I still think that freax would be a cool name for a #legacy #Linux distro.

I chose @OS1337OS/1337 tho instead, innpart cuz someone else more talented should have the honours of taking #freax as name.

Still hats off to @torvaldsLinus Torvalds who's 'small, non-serious project' grew and blossoms now into an ecosystem that wipes the floor with #Windows, and I'd consider the "true winner" of the #UnixWars (unless we only consider certified-compliant #Unix-delineating #Distros, then ir's #macOS)…
