There are plentiful long discussions and history on the subject matter, and multiple solutions being discussed among which various forms of - what's current called but may have to be renamed - nomadic identity. #ActivityPub enhancement proposals #FEP's hopefully bring a measure of standardization.

Nomadic identity for the fediverse?

“portable identity” is not well-defined concept, I prefer to call it cryptographic identity or key-based identity. However, the name of the FEP is “Portable objects”. The combination of cryptographic identity and cryptographic integrity proofs makes objects portable.
