What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

We'd like to introduce the project family—a set of related tools that make building applications more accessible:

Fedify :fedify:

Fedify (@fedifyFedify: ActivityPub server framework) is a library for building federated server applications powered by ActivityPub and other standards. It provides type-safe objects for Activity Vocabulary, WebFinger client/server, HTTP Signatures, and more—eliminating boilerplate code so you can focus on your application logic.

Hollo :hollo:

Hollo (@holloHollo :hollo:) is a single-user microblogging server powered by Fedify. While designed for individual users, it's fully federated through ActivityPub, allowing interaction with users across the fediverse. implements Mastodon-compatible APIs, making it compatible with most Mastodon clients without needing its own web interface.

Hollo also serves as our testing ground for bleeding-edge Fedify features before they're officially released.

BotKit :botkit:

BotKit (@botkitBotKit by Fedify :botkit:) is our newest family member—a framework specifically designed for creating ActivityPub bots. Unlike traditional Mastodon bots, creates standalone ActivityPub servers that aren't constrained by platform-specific limitations (like character counts).

BotKit's API is intentionally simple—you can create a complete bot in a single TypeScript file!

All three projects are open source and hosted under the @fedify-dev GitHub organization. While they serve different purposes, they share common goals: making ActivityPub development more accessible and expanding the fediverse ecosystem.

If you're interested in trying any of these projects or contributing to their development, check out:

Inspired by a woodland hike under the first blue skies we've seen this year, I got home and showed my kiddo how to draw an tree with recursive functions. The shape is very sensitive to parameters like the factors by which each branch is thinner and shorter than its parents, but we tuned them until our results looked like the trees we'd seen in the afternoon.

Vector graphics of clear blue skies behind the dark silhouette of a winter leafless fractal tree, bifurcating iteratively from a stout trunk to a flurry of tiny twigs.

A self-published physical edition of an indie game? Not an indie game that sells as a physical version manufactured or distributed through an established publisher, but instead a homemade physical version of indie game made with blank CDs, disc cases, and printed box art. Maybe a manual?

Give me your thoughts on this! Is that an idea that tickles your fancy? If you found a cool game at a convention and they sold homemade physical versions for PC/Linux, would you be like "Whoa cool!!”?

Nice little feature in the IceShrimp.NET beta I found today. Most of the Forkey platforms have the concept of a "Drive" where all the media you've uploaded is contained.

In the drive, warnings have been added to any image that is missing ALT text. You can go through and easily add the missing ALT text right from this screen!

A screenshot of a file directory displaying various media files, including images and a video. Small icons appear on the images, identifying them as the image used for your profile or banner, a warning sign if no alt text has been entered, or the term "CC" if alt text has been added.

Just responded to some browser compatibility issues with . Turns out bundling everything in one package creates headaches for Next.js and other browser environments.

For the next minor version, we're breaking things up:

  • @logtape/logtape will be browser-friendly with zero compromises
  • @logtape/file will handle filesystem operations
  • Other specialized features will get their own packages

This should make LogTape work seamlessly across all environments while giving developers better control over what they include.

I posted this a long time ago but it must have gotten deleted. Here's a reminder graphic on how to be the least bit strategic when dealing with the political spectrum: you can't just blindly fight everybody who doesn't share your same position, you need allies and you need to focus your efforts efficiently. Don't fight people close to you who differ on key details harder than actual Nazis.

A diagram showing extreme allies on the left and enemies on the right with yourself in the middle. Moderate allies, moderates, and moderate opposition are between you and the enemies. The graphic says to aid extreme allies, support those with your same position, encourage moderate allies, convince moderates, diffuse moderate opposition, and oppose enemies.

A few-months-in update to my headphones, and: for my use cases, I dearly wish I'd bought something else.

Pros: Incredible sound quality (both out and in, I've had people pause in meetings to compliment how good my voice sounds), great battery life, unbelievable comfort (I could wear these for 8 hours a day), can connect to and seamlessly switch between two devices (crucial, my work day is a mix of music on my phone and work meetings).

But the cons. Oh, the cons. 🧵

I can’t stop thinking about the Airbus parallels when I see the Brits being all defeatist about the Franco-German-led Europe being able to “de-Americanize” their militaries.

Remember that the UK didn’t believe Airbus could work, and preferred to bet on Boeing and the sovereign BAC project. Look where that led them.

Hi Mastodon people, long time no see! Work has been hectic for me in the past six months or so, but I finally have time to relax.

This is the poster I've painted for les Aventuriales, a SFF book convention that will take place on the last weekend of September in Ménétrol (near Clermont-Ferrand), France. Some of you may already be familiar with this robot -- I reworked one of my personal pieces for them, extending it vertically and adding some books to it :)

Painting of a magical-looking robot sitting by the window of a rusty, beached ship. It's cold and rainy outside, but inside the robot has a pile of cushions and blankets and is currently drinking tea while reading a book.

I wasn't going to say anything because I worried it might seem a bit performative and maybe not my place, but I want to say something. I was really rocked to find out about the death of @n69n. I didn't know them other than to chat on Fedi, but they were really important to me when I was first diagnosed (and gave some excellent guidance and reassurance), and checked in on me when I was hospital recently and once or twice when I was feeling low. We said some daft things to each other and made each other laugh and they said they were glad to have me as a friend. And when someone says something like that to me it's like a switch gets flipped in my head. Which is why when I'd not heard from them for a while I went looking to see what they were upto and assumed they were just having a break for whatever reason. So it was a shock. I know some of you knew them and my heart goes out to you. They made a material difference to me and my life, as I'm sure they must have done to plenty of other people. Please don't respond to this. I just wanted people to know I thought Norn was a warm, kind and funny person and that I will miss them. X

With my friend Ríša, we're collecting $500 for night-capable drones as a part of the Triad project organized by Dzyga's Paw (dzygaspaw.com). To donate, follow this link: dzygaspaw.com/triad-night-dron (the link takes you to the project donation page with donation note pre-filled with "Jakub Ambassador" which associates your donation with my sub-fundraiser). I'll match every donation from my pocket, so your money counts twice!

The fundraiser collects money for 90 drones equipped with thermal cameras, which allow them to operate at night and in bad weather. Maintaining technological superiority is crucial for Ukraine to keep the edge on the battlefield and stay alive.

If trump, musk and putin were dead, would this world would be a lot different right now?

Would maga exist?

Would a foreign born multi-billionaire
be fueling the direct decimation of the US Government?

Would Russia be in Ukraine?

I despise asking for help in such situations, but if anyone reads this that is charitable enough, my Ko-Fi is listed below as any donation would be helpful to cover keeping a roof over my head.

Reposts are appreciated and thanks in advance for any assistance. ❤️ 🙏

It's time to protect my servers with NUT on my Pi!

The power company said they'll cut power this week for a transformer swap... so UPS monitoring moved up to the top of my priority list, resulting in today's video: youtube.com/watch?v=yFnItLSRpLI

I have three different fediverse accounts. I tried to combine them, but was unsuccessful. So I've decided to keep them separate, and use them for separate purposes. This one is going to be the account I use to follow smart people who have good insights about politics.

The people I was following who tend to talk about politics a lot, I unfollowed from my mendeddrum.org account (where I've now got filters blocking a bunch of political terms) & followed from this account instead.

If I have something to say about politics, this is also where I'll be posting it. If you want to see my non-politics posts (I do share pictures of my pets every now and then, & they are very cute!) follow that other account.

You're welcome to follow both if you want! But I might follow back on only one of them -- which one would depend on how much you yourself post about politics!

I'm trying this as a way to manage my anxiety & still be able to take action when needed & understand what's happening around me.
