게임 내용이 사전 공개될 때부터 격렬한 논쟁에 휩싸인 『시드 마이어의 문명 Ⅶ』입니다. 저도 많은 사람들과 걱정을 공유했고, 어쨌든 시간을 쪼개 두어 판 플레이해 보았습니다. 대충 30시간은 한 것 같고, 1.1 패치가 공개되기 전인 지금이 글을 올리기 좋은 타이밍인 것 같아 정리해서 올려 봅니다.

일단 게임 자체는 재미있습니다. 정찰병을 어느 방향으로 보낼지 고민하고, 타일 배치를 고민하고, 어느 순서대로 연구할지, 무엇부터 생산할지, 경쟁자의 위치를 보고 어디로 확장할지, 어떻게 대응할지를 고민하는 재미는 여전합니다. 새롭게 개편된 시대와 시대별 문명도 그런 고민의 일부분으로도, 시대가 저물고 새 시대가 오는 느낌을 맞이하는 느낌도 괜찮습니다. 심지어, 이건 논쟁의 여지 없이 싫다고 생각했던 메타게임 프로그레션도 다음 판은 무슨 지도자를 해 볼까…를 고민할 때 도움이 되는 것 같고요. (몇 판 하면 그냥 짜증나는 포인트로 돌아갈 것 같긴 합니다만)

『휴먼카인드』때 걱정했던 내가 옆집 철수랑 게임하는 것 같고 별로 역사 게임 같은 느낌이 들지 않을 것 같다…는 느낌은 놀랍게도 없습니다. 히미코의 하와이 제국이 근대에는 메이지 일본이 되겠지 싶었는데 웬걸, 히미코는 마자파힛 제국의 여왕이 되어 있고 메이지 일본은 웬 호세 리살이 이끌고 있는 상황인데도, 상대 플레이어 하나하나들이 어떠한 국가와 민족을 대표하는 경쟁자라는 생각이 잘 들고, 시들하지 않습니다.

아쉬운 점이 없지는 않습니다. 승리조건간의 밸런스가 잘 맞지 않는 느낌입니다. 내정형 승리조건 중 문화 승리가 너무 가깝게 있고, 경제 승리는 꽤 멀게 느껴져서 게임을 이긴다는 조건만으로 놓고 보면 다른 승리조건을 노려도 남는 에너지로 하는 승리조건으로도 문화 승리 조건을 먼저 만족하게 되지 않나 싶습니다. 문화 승리는 돈으로 펌핑이 되고, AI에 문제가 있는 것처럼도 보입니다.(저는 정확히 어디가 문제인지는 모르겠지만, 1.1.0에 수정한다는 걸 보니 커뮤니티는 뭔가를 아는 것 같습니다) 경제 승리는 구조적으로 턴을 쌓아야 하는 구조에다가, 공장을 가동시키기 위해서는 수도와 철도로 연결되어야 하는데 놀랍게도 평범하게 게임을 하다 보면 많은 도시가 철도는 커녕 도로조차 연결되어 있지 않은 경우가 많아서… 제가 게임을 치열하게 하는 편을 하는 편은 아니다보니 게임 규칙에 관련해서는 승리조건 정도가 아쉽습니다.

UI의 완성도는 문제가 있습니다. 몇 번의 패치로 괜찮아지기는 했지만, 버튼을 눌러서 어떤 행동이 실행되고 보여주는 정보가 바뀌어야 하는데 UI가 갱신되지 않는 것처럼 보이는 상태는 여전히 여기저기 남아있는 것 같고, 특정 문명이 가지고 있는 세부 위인들의 정보를 확인하기는 어렵습니다. 문명 6에서도 결국 모드로 적용하기는 했지만 정책 슬롯이 구체적으로 몇의 이익을 주는지 확인하고 싶고… 어떤 방식으로든 나아졌으면 좋겠습니다. 지금도 뭐 플레이하는 데 크게 지장은 없지만요.

총체적으로, 이것저것 메인 게임이 콘텐츠가 부족해 보이는 상태로, 비싼 가격에 파는 것이 마음에 들지 않지만… 뭐 정신 차려놓고 보니 이미 30시간을 즐겼고, 더 즐기면 즐겼지 내려놓지는 않을 것 같습니다. 빨리 모드가 열려서 이것저것 더 해 볼 수 있게 되면 좋겠네요. 그리고 한국 문명을 빨리 내 줬으면 합니다.
