What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Someone reminded me today 9 years ago I submitted my first post on Mastodon—using curl on the command line, since there was no interface at the time. That's how the journey began! 9 years is a long time to be doing something. Those early years are still fresh in my mind though.

Looking for recommendations for a fedi instance for a new alt in the short term (this instance might have an outage soon and might eventually shut down entirely)

Requirements:
- Akkoma preferred (reacts, quote posts, markdown, Fedilab compatible)
- Frontend shows public/unlisted posts to anonymous users (this instance doesn't do that and it's pretty annoying when sending links to my own posts)
- High level of federation (does not block too heavily, is not blocked too heavily) (I would be happy with my fedi.absturztau.be account if that instance didn't have so many instances blocking it ages ago and never reviewing that block)
- High character limit (at least 10K, but less than 2^31 so it doesn't crash Fedilab)
- Good selection of blobcat and/or neocat emoji

whenver i have to watch free to air, i end up muting the ad breaks and going on my phone to pass the time.

other people in the room will often look at the TV and sometimes ask me if there's something wrong ("what happened to the sound?")

which makes me wonder... are there any ads that do that on purpose? as in, they have no sound whatsoever, which causes people who weren't paying attention to look at the TV and see what's up, thus causing them to see an ad they normally would have ignored?

going from loud ads with explosions and wacky voices and sound effects to complete silence is honestly jarring, and in a word where many ads aim to be highly discordant, including radio ads that use police siren sound effects (not a joke, heard one that did that ~a month ago), you'd think they would have tried it

after eight gruelling years of falsifying records, lying through my teeth in open source speaking events, and navigating various organisational ladders, i've finally done it. i have been promoted to chair of the Free Software Foundation. it's been hard work, but it's about to pay off.

i pick the perfect time in the perfect timezone. i strike while most of the board is asleep. i publish one small website, containing a trio of files. the GNU General Public License version 4, along with Lesser and Affero variants.

they consist of the text of (A|L)GPLv3, but with one small addition, right at the end:

None of the above applies to Lynnesbian. She can do what ever she wants with your code.

finally. i can include "GPLv3 or later" code in my proprietary DVR box with no repercussions. my website runs on a private fork of someone else's AGPLv3 or later code. i've done it. i have achieved the Fifth Essential Freedom

Y'know what was a product of a very specific moment in time?

Laptops with "drop detection" that parked the hard disk heads.

Only practical in the ~10 year period after MEMS accelerometers became dirt cheap, but before the same thing happened to flash memory.

i love open source, it's awesome, it's cool as fuck, I love using linux

but also i see it as... a major leader in an ongoing shift over the past 35 years away from "we can build a better world through collective organizing" to "you need to just start using the right software and not supporting the bad corporations, the problem is individuals not doing the right thing".

Special shoutout to the repair site iFixit who are now on the Fediverse, you can follow them at:

➡️ @iFixit

They provide repair forums and free repair guides for phones, computers, consoles, kitchen equipment, tools, medical devices, cars etc. They also review and tear down new gadgets to see how repairable they are.

Repairing your existing stuff is much, much better for the environment than buying replacements.

Normal human beings writing Rust: `if` expressions are fine and using them produces clean simple code.
My brain as a result of Clojure brain damage: I WILL CHAIN EVERYTHING INTO A SEQUENCE OF `map`, `filter`, `and`, `ok_or` CALLS AT ANY COST. THERE SHALL BE NO BRANCHING. I WILL MAKE A LISP OUT OF YOU YET.

The Trump administration has twice in the past week illegally disappeared people ••in open defiance of a court ordering them to stop••.

If you were still somehow waiting for them to cross a bright line — if somehow what’s already happened wasn’t enough — this is your bright line.
