Overseas Canadians: now that an election's been called, I recommend getting registered to vote from abroad right away. This applies if you're just going to be on a trip on election day too. I've done it before, when an election was called while I was on my honeymoon, and it wasn't a difficult process at all. Something cool about voting from an embassy, honestly. travel.gc.ca/travelling/living

<sigh>

Hey s! The long range weather forecast is, roughly translated, "rain until June, with regular 'atmospheric river' events to break up the monotony."

I need rain gear.

What gear will keep me somewhat dry and warm on the wet coast of Canada?

Can anyone help me help a friend recover his compromised Facebook account? He's not sure how it got hijacked, but someone is using it to reach out to people, make a friend request, and then ask them out on dates. He's an investigative reporter, so it's not clear if this is a targeted attack attempting to meddle with confidential sources or an opportunistic one doing something like pig butchering. In any event, the compromised account poses a threat to Facebook users. My friend has tried recovering his account by sending FB a scan of his driver license, but the recovery link he gets gives him an error when he clicks on it. Does anyone reading this work in security at FB, or know someone who does? I (and my friend) would be so grateful for any help. Please DM me, preferably by Signal (DanArs.82) or here on Mastodon.

My IP is clearly on some kind of low-reputation list. I get CAPTCHAs on various sites, even on PyPI I see a flash of "fastly verifying your browser" on project pages. I have no idea how this happened, and it looks like my IP has not changed for months. When I searched for why this might be, this post seems to be the most popular one, which pretty much just says "yeah, that's a bummer".

It's not as bad as getting blocked, but it is annoying. Is there *nothing* I can do?

I know a lot of people switched to the new fonts right after their conception, but I've actually sticked with Cantarell 'till the very end except for some light testing. Just upgraded to the latest Fedora beta with the new fonts, and it's a whole new world!

This is the culmination of years of discussion and research by many people, but @monsterJamie 🐈‍⬛ deserves a special thanks for spearheading this particular solution and pushing the initiative over the finish line once and for all.

went on a walk to grab coffee and I saw an older (40s-50s?) black guy out intermittently throwing up the black power fist and wearing a bright yellow shirt that said "nordicism is nazism" on one side and "fuck nazis" on the other so I had to ask him what he was up to.

we had a brief convo and he seemed chill enough and basically was saying "yeah we got too many comfortable white supremacists out here these days, and I just want to show people that's not cool". hell yeah brother

#Fediblock
To Those Born Later
(Brecht, 1938)

I

Truly, I live in dark times!
The guileless word is folly. A smooth forehead
Suggests insensitivity. The man who laughs
Has simply not yet heard
The terrible news.

What kind of times are they, when
A talk about trees is almost a crime
Because it implies silence about so many horrors?
That man there calmly crossing the street
Is already perhaps beyond the reach of his friends
Who are in need?

It is true I still earn my keep
But, believe me, that is only an accident. Nothing
I do gives me the right to eat my fill.
By chance I've been spared. (If my luck breaks, I am lost.)

They say to me: Eat and drink! Be glad you have it!
But how can I eat and drink if I snatch what I eat
From the starving, and
My glass of water belongs to one dying of thirst?
And yet I eat and drink.

I would also like to be wise.
In the old books it says what wisdom is:
To shun the strife of the world and to live out
Your brief time without fear
Also to get along without violence
To return good for evil
Not to fulfill your desires but to forget them
Is accounted wise.
All this I cannot do:
Truly, I live in dark times.

II

I came to the cities in a time of disorder
When hunger ruled.
I came among men in a time of uprising
And I revolted with them.
So the time passed away
Which on earth was given me.

My food I ate between battles
To sleep I lay down among murderers
Love I practised carelessly
And nature I looked at without patience.
So passed my time
Which on earth was given to me.

All roads led into the swamp in my time.
My tongue betrayed me to the butchers.
There was little I could do. But those in power
Sat safer without me: that was my hope.
So passed my time
Which on earth was given to me.

Our forces were slight. Our goal
Lay far in the distance
It was clearly visible, though I myself
Was unlikely to reach it.
So passed my time
Which on earth was given to me.

III

You who will emerge from the flood
In which we are sinking,
Think —
When you speak of our weaknesses,
Also of the dark time
That brought them forth.

For we went, changing our country more often than our shoes.
In the class war, despairing
When there was only injustice and no resistance.

For we knew only too well:
Even the hatred of squalor
Makes the brow grow stern.
Even anger against injustice
Makes the voice grow harsh. Alas, we
Who wished to lay the foundations of kindness
Could not ourselves be kind.

But you, when the time comes at last
That man can help his fellow man,
Think of us
With leniency.

Someone reminded me today 9 years ago I submitted my first post on Mastodon—using curl on the command line, since there was no interface at the time. That's how the journey began! 9 years is a long time to be doing something. Those early years are still fresh in my mind though.

Well, I'm back.

My surname is Stone and my chosen-name is Bear and there is a slight flaw in my character.
:potion_genderqueer: dà-anam 🧙 :rainbowinfinity: storyteller/beat poet making their way in the greasy underbelly of the 'net. , , and thinking about are pastimes. , , , , stomping ; means *everyone*.

I am Universalist with strong Old Celtic leanings, Jewish-adjacent, Baha'i-adjacent, my bestie is Christian, and my circle is generally eclectic, including at least one athiest. None of them try to *impose* their views.

I am also a former professional and current amateur journalist. Sources get cited, mistakes corrected; I invite you to do likewise.

Love wins, hate gets used for a DANCE FLOOR. Can't stop the :signal:

AND MY INTRO FITS IN ONE! Thanks, !! It's good to be back.

EDIT: Avatar pic is of a bear-shaped mountain, a Stone Bear; banner pic as of 2025-09-23 is a bowl of mashed potatoes with the caption HEY 47, REMEMBER THIS? in honour of Potato Flake's absolute LOVE of Mashed Potatoes. qv: youtube.com/shorts/Ahm4groRixE ...

In 1968, Douglas Engelbart revolutionized computing by showing the mouse, hypertext, and collaborative computing in "The Mother of All Demos". Most of his ideas are now part of everyday computing, but one device—the keyset—failed to catch on. Let's look at Engelbart's demo and the keyset. 1/N

The keyset is an input device with five long, flat keys, similar to piano keys but thinner. The device and the keys are beige. A braided wire cord exits the device at the top.An image from Engelbart's demo. At the top, the screen shows lines of text. The bottom of the image shows Engelbart at a special desk. The desk has a keyboard in the center with a keyset on the left and a mouse on the right.
