anyway that's a bit high level and abstract and rambly, but it's the reason i've invested in this platform. the right thing at the right time isn't enough to guarantee success, but it does help.
we'll see how it goes. but the instant social graph portability is a great reason to build an app on top of atproto. and the mashup potential is huge. the dream of web 2.0 died because companies didn't have to be open, on atproto they're locked open to a larger degree
but at the end of the day, federation nerds aren't as important as normal folks, if your goal is to build a platform for the next generation of apps (or, as i personally think of atproto,) as "web4" (sucks that web3 is... bad). it learned the right lessons from the past.
or another way, atproto started from "how can we design the network to handle massive scale?" and AP just did not. atproto is designed in a very similar fashion to the internal designs of large proprietary social networking apps
one of the biggest differences is that the AP folks started from "we think federation means x" and then tried to build a product on top. atproto says "we need a product that does x" and then built federation to serve it. this matters a ton. atproto can do things like "search" that AP just can't.
