What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

There's a new product that has been gaining some buzz in the blind community, a Windows app called Guide that uses AI to perform tasks on your computer. It's pitched as a way to get around web accessibility problems in particular. I won't link to the thing itself, because I don't want to give it that validation, but I'll link to a previous discussion thread about it: fed.interfree.ca/notes/a5wf4ys

I've spent some time taking this app apart. The level of shoddy work here is deeply disgusting. 1/?

๐Ÿ“ New Blog Post: Poisoning Well

I have started publishing nonsense content on my blog, to hopefully mess with LLM crawlers.

Here is the article, all about it: heydonworks.com/article/poison

And here is the nonsense companion article, all about whatever: heydonworks.com/nonsense/poiso

What I dislike most about is the fact that the people doing it know the power of boycotting, but they mostly use it to what people say or believe in.

Governments and are destroying privacy, a critical pillar of democracy, with the goal of doing the same thing that cancel culture is about.

That is, controlling what people are allowed to say (dissent/freedom of speech) and controlling what people believe in (culture/family).

Ah thanks for making exactly the structural power point completely clear. This is the kind of reply that my work often elicits and I really find it fascinating. "Diverse colleagues" being not "actual engineering" and rendered as "distracting bullshit" is exactly the credentialing you need to perform to align with a vision of tech as all power no accountability. You're not demonstrating what you value, you're demonstrating that you have the power to devalue.

Reminder: I'm fundraising for United Farm Workers and I still have lots of match left! We're at $1070/5000. Will you make a donation in honour of Cesar Chavez Day, and send me your receipts for the match? ufw.org/sparechange/

Let's support the work UFW organizes like this march today ufw.org/on-cesar-chavez-day-uf

My 10yo son said he noticed something odd about multiplication.
If you have some number C, then (C+1)*(C-1) is 1 less than C*C.
We started exploring and it worked with any C we tried.
We tried +/-2 and it was 4 less. He said he thought it was going by the square.
So we tried +/-3 and yep, it was 9 less.
C doesn't have to be an integer either.
It was a cool pattern he noticed and it was fun getting to explore math with him.
He surprised me a bit with that kind of an insight.

Today is my birthday.

I am a 41 year old cis white male in tech.

I am not inclined to make birthday requests even of the send cute pictures of animals kind.

However, today is also Trans Day of Visibility so here is a list of organizations I give money to and that you could also give money to.

love the energy ya'll are bringing and it warms my heart to see so many people also mad about the phone thing (and I only got a few misguided well intentioned replies suggesting I use better software), but don't forget to peruse my ๏ฝขmedia tab๏ฝฃ and maybe indulge in a little boostaroo on a few of my projects that catch your fancy :3

getting a surge of followers for being mad online is nice but it doesn't create healthy social media incentives for me you know?

We left some things at a hotel recently. They said they'd ship them to us but it would be $41. A bit steep but probably cheaper than buying new. The package was delivered last week and today we woke up to a notice from FedEx that the actual charge was $181 and they had deducted that amount from our credit card. I can't call FedEx because without an account number, their phone tree just hangs up on you and their virtual assistant is useless. I don't ship but if you do, avoid FedEx.

I took part in 39 over the weekend and made a game in . It's a single-tap rhythm game. Should work on any desktop browser and most new phones. It was a fun challenge to make a game where the realtime music sync is so important. You want to let people tap a little too late and still have the game allow it. You want it to be playable with Bluetooth headphones and keyboards that add a lot of latency.

Play at ambv.pyscriptapps.com/streamli

The logo screen of the game. STREAMLINE is written in the middle. A single three-dimensional multisegment line spans into the horizon in the background. The aesthetic vaguely resembles the "cyberspace" from TRON or Hackers, with blue-ish green-ish colors dominating.

Oh hi, it's , just popping up to say hi, I'm trans and work on trust & safety for the Fediverse, help with hachyderm infrastructure, and contribute to a whole bunch of open source projects.

If you'd like to support my work: support.thisismissem.social

Right now your support is the difference between me being able to make ends meet and not, as freelance work is a bit hard to find right now.

Want to use sed(1) to edit a file in place? Well, to replace every 'e' with
an 'o', in a file named 'foo', you can do:

sed -i.bak s/e/o/g foo

And you'll get a backup of the original in a file named 'foo.bak', but if you
want no backup:

sed -i '' s/e/o/g foo
