There's a new product that has been gaining some buzz in the blind community, a Windows app called Guide that uses AI to perform tasks on your computer. It's pitched as a way to get around web accessibility problems in particular. I won't link to the thing itself, because I don't want to give it that validation, but I'll link to a previous discussion thread about it: fed.interfree.ca/notes/a5wf4ys

I've spent some time taking this app apart. The level of shoddy work here is deeply disgusting. 1/?

Oh hi, it's , just popping up to say hi, I'm trans and work on trust & safety for the Fediverse, help with hachyderm infrastructure, and contribute to a whole bunch of open source projects.

If you'd like to support my work: support.thisismissem.social

Right now your support is the difference between me being able to make ends meet and not, as freelance work is a bit hard to find right now.

Daher musste ein neuer Ablauf her...

Before the awful festivities of tomorrow's holiday, I wanted to take a moment to reflect, as it will mark 17 years of for me, personally.

It's been a tough road, and 45/47 definitely has made the past decade rough as all hell. But I keep showing up, one day at a time.

My health has declined since the first COVID infection in 2022, but even with these symptoms, it's a world of difference being sober. My liver and kidneys aren't constantly filtering poison from my body, and after 17 years of time off, maybe they're doing pretty great. Take a look at the before and after photos below...70 extra lbs is a lot to carry!

If you are questioning whether you need to stop drinking, or picking up that drug of choice: Don't lie to yourself. It's incredibly easy to lie to yourself, very difficult and admirable to reject lying to yourself in this moment.

If I can do this, you can do this. Stay strong. Stay alive.

Here's to tomorrow's challenges, which I will face like I did today's: With effort, but also resolve

What I dislike most about is the fact that the people doing it know the power of boycotting, but they mostly use it to what people say or believe in.

Governments and are destroying privacy, a critical pillar of democracy, with the goal of doing the same thing that cancel culture is about.

That is, controlling what people are allowed to say (dissent/freedom of speech) and controlling what people believe in (culture/family).

Ah thanks for making exactly the structural power point completely clear. This is the kind of reply that my work often elicits and I really find it fascinating. "Diverse colleagues" being not "actual engineering" and rendered as "distracting bullshit" is exactly the credentialing you need to perform to align with a vision of tech as all power no accountability. You're not demonstrating what you value, you're demonstrating that you have the power to devalue.
