What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

New UX models have friction.

The Mach E has a push button door: push the button first, pop the door. It works once "you've read the manual" Two problems:
1. As I approached the car at Avis it was dark, I couldn't see the button at all so couldn't get it, I had to ask someone to let me in.
2. When I picked up my son at the airport, he had no idea how to open the passenger door so I had to open it from the inside.

Ford may keep this, but it's going to be a painful road.

Photo of me in front of a Ford Mustage Mach E. It shows the "door handle" which is just an enameled metal flange that doesn't move. You open the door by pushing a button, which pops open the door.

After pretty much 1 year of work the result is finally public.

For those that don't know, in early 2024 I joined the Darkglass Electronics company. Bringing the expertise developed through many years with MOD Devices / MOD Audio and my own projects, and started to create together with them a super fancy new Linux-embed based product.

This runs JACK2 inside with mod-host and LV2 plugins. Very soon to start opening up to external plugin developers.
Very exciting! 🎉

So regarding the Bluesky check marks, they're basically the equivalent of TLS certificate authorities, and everyone agrees, yes?

But I see some "well someone could trust a different set of CAs so maybe it's kinda decentralized?"

Do you know anyone who installs custom certificate authorities in their browser?

Me neither.

It's been a long time since I last used any social media, almost a decade, I think. I stopped back then because my feed started showing posts from people I didn’t follow... stuff like rage bait, political takes, and random noise I didn’t ask for.

I’m really glad I found this platform, it feels so refreshing to scroll without worrying about all that clutter. Even happier to have found a server where people chat about all things math. I’m not a mathematician, just a simple engineer who loves this stuff, so I probably won’t follow everything perfectly. But I’m excited to share things I enjoy here too!

At this year's FOSS Backstage, Ariane Segelitz-Karsten talked about creating an independent foundation and the effects of moving from a company-led model to a foundation-supported one for the open-source project Yaook.

About a month ago, I spent a few weeks fighting with ancient hardware and now Maxwell+ GPUs are all Vulkan 1.4 conformant with NVK:

As it says in the blog post, Kepler is on the way but no guarantees as to when that will happen.
