What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

We’ve just uploaded a bunch of clips from @davidimel's Fediverse Corner panel at the Fediverse House at SXSW 2025, featuring @evanEvan Prodromou, @mmasnickMike Masnick ✅ and @pcottlePeter Cottle

We know the sound is super rough 😅 but many of these snippets deserve to be heard. Thanks for bearing with us.
They talk about:

- Solving the cold start problem
- Taking control back from billionaires
- The deal with Threads’ federation
- Keeping vibes sacred (and whole)

Easy to vote in Canada

I voted in the Canadian federal election today. I was fortunate to be able to do it in the morning, so this is easier than typical, probably as easy as it can possibly get, but basically:
- Walked out my door at 9:03
- Walked to polling station
- Finished voting by 9:22,
- Home at 9:47 which included a ~15 minute chat with a neighbour.

Voting should be easy, there's (literally) no reason other than ill intent that it is such a mess in the USA.

"Gov. JB Pritzker of Illinois strode into a ballroom filled with top New Hampshire Democrats on Sunday and by the end of his nearly 30-minute speech had them ready to storm the political barricades against President Trump.

'It’s time to fight everywhere and all at once,' he told the group of Democratic activists, officials and donors, who jumped to their feet with hoots and applause. 'Never before in my life have I called for mass protests, for mobilization, for disruption. But I am now.'"

트럼프와 슈미트

https://www.newscham.net/articles/112891/?s=09

I wrote a book on Linux Memory Management, published by @nostarchNo Starch Press - it's a comprehensive 1300 page exploration of Linux 6.0's memory management code, depth-first, diving into the code and REALLY explaining how things work.

The idea is to avoid hand waving as much as possible and literally explore what the kernel _actually_ does.

It's full of diagrams and careful explanations of logic including a ton of stuff you just can't find anywhere else.

It's currently available in its entirety in draft form via early access when you pre-order.

It's available at nostarch.com/linux-memory-mana

pro tip: if you see someone who goes by it pronouns, neopronouns or anything that isn't just "they/them, she/her, he/him" and they also have "normal" pronouns such as they/them... you should refer to them using it pronouns or their neopronouns. it'll make their day, a lot of people are only really referred to by the "normal" pronouns and it's rare for them to be addressed as it or xe.

"...his politics have never been a factor in any of the moderation decisions there, nor could they be."

That reads to me as a complete contradiction. Moderation is *intensely* political, and is so at its core. You cannot moderate without making decisions about what kind of speech you want to promote and endorse, and what kind of speech you do not want to be part of promoting.
