Schaut doch mal vorbei! ✊️

Einen Vorgeschmack gibt es jetzt von Feicke:

while i was picking out a can of monster in the grocery store a random cis woman just stood there for a while and then out of nowhere and quietly said something to me. i didn't catch it and turned around and smiled and said "va?" (pardon?) and she tilted her head and shyly said "you are very beautiful"

and… me being me, i gave my usual half-embarrassed little girl smile (fits me a lot better these days hahaha), said "thanks" and turned back to what i was doing (because i am INTENSE and you can't derail me very easily… or at all really) and… hey actually what just happened??? 😵‍💫

I'm sorry for the Fosstodon drama. Fosstodon was my second fedi server and there I had a lot of FOSS fun: nice people, good moderators, good topics. I left when my radicalized vision of how world was changing, also thanks to digital/software/tech stuff/hype, became too much abstracted from the "yes but huh, I do not care, any foss is good and that's all" vibe of the instance. But hey, it was me.

The Fosstodon story is another example of how our expectations of fedi aren't aligned with reality. It's not a matter of moderators, server policies, who's federated with whom. It's simply that when a group of people grows beyond a certain number (I think it's in the hundreds not in the thousands), more drama ensues and more often jerks prevail.

In short: it's not the medium, it's the people. Or people dynamics, if you want to feel less harsh. Hidden behind their keyboards, people are jerks when they have the chance. Every bar, getting bigger and bigger, is on the verge to become a jerks bar and maybe then a nazi bar. It just needs someone to become a catalyst for stupidity.

The difference between fedi and corpo social networks is that fedi doesn't want drama: it's divisive and burns moderators out. Corpo socials crave drama because it's engagement. And there are no moderators or nice corpo people to protect.

That's why any debate about "how can fedi win?" makes no sense, for me. If winning is copying the techbros and aiming to get bigger, we have ample proof that bigger instances will gradually become a mess of spam, jerks, bots, misinfo and drama and then - if below a critical self-sustainable mass - collapse. Instances even bigger, will stay the mess they've become. Thinking "oh but this time it's different, we're different" is naive.

In real life, we're praising the beauty of local communities and of communities of interest, and the value of real interactions in smaller groups. This is also a value fedi should underline: bigger is not better, smaller has much more appeal. But, again, it's me.

so after repairing that ps2 fat yesterday, i noticed that it wasn't playing back Ico properly. the disc would attempt to spin up for a half second, retry several times, then give up for good.

the disc was in perfect shape.

i noticed that it was a blue/purple bottomed disc, which made me curious. as it turns out, the blue discs are CD-ROMs. there are very few of them for the PS2, and then almost always cause read problems.

in the 00's teenagers figured out that if you put two pieces of masking tape on opposite sides of the spindle hole of a CD, the PS2 would read the game properly. i was perplexed by this, because i couldn't find any explanation of why the "tape trick" worked. was it shimming a gap between the disc and the tray?

as it turns out, a very young kid named Denzel explained it perfectly in his 16 year old 3gp cell phone video:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=iaaRs_

the problem is caused by a weak magnet used in the tray that hovers over the spindle. seen below, this white piece of plastic clamps down on top of the CD's "clamping area" (the perimeter of the donut hole). it is meant to both hold the disc level, *and* prevent the disc from slipping on the spindle.

since putting downforce weight/pressure on the spindle is a Bad Idea (motors don't love this), engineers embedded a magnet in the white plastic: when the plastic came close to the metal spindle, the magnetic forces sandwich CD between the spindle and white plastic. with enough magnetic grip, the CD wouldn't slip at all.

it works great for DVDs that spin at 4x.

unfortunately the PS2 engineers did not consider at least three things:
- playstation CD-ROMs are much heavier and more difficult to spin than DVDs, requiring more friction from the spindle.
- the CD-ROM in the ps2 spins at 24x. the motor goes into jet engine mode when it detects a CD. it needs *much* more sticky friction to keep that CD from slipping when the motor is sending your disc off into orbit.
- the cheapass fridge magnet inside of the plastic disc would lose their magnetism over time - due to various factors (EM fields, shock, heat). even a tiny percent change was enough to let a CD disc slip.

the solution? i stole a tiny strong button magnet from one of my fridge magnet toys. it very easily centered on the existing magnet, without needing glue.

this is information now buried in hundreds of shitty youtube videos and reddidiots *still* telling people to stick tape on their CDs.

The tray spindle is a plastic disc. It is shown in its original design, sitting inside of the top DVD tray. The tray spindle is a plastic disc. It is shown in its original design, removed from the tray showing the flimsy magnet inside. The tray spindle is a plastic disc. It is shown now with a tiny fridge magnet stuck in its center. The tray spindle is a plastic disc. It is sitting back inside of the top DVD tray, now with a second magnet attached to it.

Nein? Aha!
