@osuoslOSU Open Source Lab has been around for 22 years. They kindly host our gitlab for 6 months now, and provide important services for more than 150 other free and open source software communities such as @alpinelinuxAlpine Linux , @chimeraChimera Linux , @debian, @fdroidorgF-Droid, @gentoo, @gnome, @LineageOS, #ReplicantOS, @torprojectThe Tor Project. Now their future is in jeopardy 😢

We usually don't ask this, but please boost for reach, this is important infrastructure for so many FLOSS projects!

The @osuoslOSU Open Source Lab asked for help with funding to keep services going. They power hundreds of open source projects (@openstreetmap, CensusReporter, Debian, Sqlite, etc.) by providing free or low-cost co-location, VMs, storage, distributed mirroring, and more. They give experience to students at OSU, who help maintain the hardware and systems we all rely on.

They are a vital piece of the open source world, and need some ideas for funding. If something comes to mind, reach out and I will pass it along.

Reasons farmers have given me for wanting to retire to The Simple Life (office work):

- number one reason, by a massive margin "my back is fucked"
- you can be inside out of the sun and in aircon. Not just at dinner time but *all the time*
- you can sit down and it's not a break, it counts as work
- very few things in an office can remove a finger
- dangerous work equipment such as firearms do not need to be stored on the same premises where your children live
- you're probably not going to do directly responsible for the welfare of thousands of animals
- if the business goes under, you are free to find a new job. Your family is not forced to live in the physical remains of the failed business
- even if the business you work for can't achieve its goals, there generally won't be a large scale animal euthanasia (or plant death) around your home
- you get paid every month, not once a year. Often your wage is set, or sometimes it's related to how much work you do. Your wage doesn't fluctuate wildly according to rainfall, demand, etc.
- office work involves other humans
- very few low paid office workers have to buy and mortgage their workspace in an increasingly abusive financial system which leads them into deeper and deeper debt in order to continue working the same... Desk

I'm admitting the legalese is making it difficult to get an answer for my last question.

If my Mastodon post can be seen on Threads, can they also use that content on their other Meta platforms? Right now, Threads posts can be seen on Instagram and Facebook unless you explicitly turn it off. But I don't see any clear answer about how posts from "the Protocol" would be affected.

Another interesting addition is that even if you DO NOT opt in, they are making sure you understand any public post can still be seen outside of the Threads service. Normal things like a public embed, search engine indexing, or scrapers (sound familiar?)

But! We've already seen this a bit, they are mentioning that your content can appear on OTHER Meta platforms like Instagram or Facebook. Even if you are NOT opted in to "the Protocol".

I'm no lawyer but I do look at application contracts quite often.

It makes it clear you, as a user, are OPTING IN to the federation service. So it sounds like it won't be enabled by default, as expected.

In regards to "the Protocol", this is Threads saying "look, if you opt into this, we don't control how your content is used once it leaves our system. We do our best to communicate your request, but it's up to the third parties to handle it ultimately."

In all my years of doing physics, I never figured out the intuitive meaning of the lagrangian (or the action). Why should the difference between kinetic and potential energy play such a prominent role? What separates kinetic from potential energy?

Disconcerting is when one watches Fantasia.

Planning to read the document in its entirety, but based on the overview, the ruling against Apple appears to be a MASSIVE victory against their anticompetitive practices and their stranglehold over apps. It is very long overdue for them to face consequences, including potential criminal contempt.
