What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

If somehow I become president or pope or something, my top priority will be making it illegal to manufacture or distribute devices with USB-C connectors for power input but that require a USB-A power source to charge.

(I've been encountering this a lot lately. Grr).

Policy-wise I ought to be an "abundance agenda" nitwit; I *do* tend to think that we have too many veto chokepoints (particularly in California), and the left is (sorry) full to bursting with useful idiots who will constantly make common cause with rentier landlords in the name of "environmental impact" or whatever. But translating Klein's muddled mess of hippie-punching and yearning for a prelapsarian laissez-faire zoning regime feels like the kind of sane-washing people do for Trump.

So apparently nearly all students cheat with AI chatbots now and basically aren't learning anything nymag.com/intelligencer/articl

I'm grateful I got my education before these tools were available.

Still, part of this might be that education might be best if it's not actually based around grading, but working with students to actually be excited about learning

But there's no way such a worldview will be rolled out in time to survive this

The terrifying thing about "AI" isn't the technology itself, but what it's revealed about so many of our fellow humans.

It was bad enough that people think learning, skill, and craftsmanship are a waste of time.

Now they believe *existing* can be automated.

Input on the English language:

In Danish we have a term called the "not test”, and we sometimes say about a political view, that it does not pass the not test, if no one would take the opposite view.

For instance, if a politician campaigns on wanting children to live happy lives, we may say, “it does not pass the not test", because no candidate is running on NOT wanting children to live happy lives.

Is there an established English term for such a "not test”?

24 hours is definitely the worst session duration.

If you're going to make people sign in to a work tool every day make the session duration ~16 hours so they have to sign in the first time they interact with the thing.
