Who Broke the Internet?

julian @julian@community.nodebb.org

Today I'm listening to Who Broke the Internet?, a four-part series by @<bdi>pluralistic@mamot.fr</bdi> on CBC's Understood podcast.

Google Search was the gold standard — a product born in a dorm room during the internet’s early, idealistic era. But when internal emails surfaced they revealed a deeper conflict inside the company: was Google making Search worse, on purpose, to boost ad revenue? Google says its changes are all about benefiting users. Critics say it’s all part of a bigger pattern — one that host Cory Doctorow calls enshittification: the slow, deliberate decay of platforms in the name of profit.

Have you noticed internet search has become next to useless? It's like the arms-race between search and spam is ramping up, and not in a good way. Cory lays out the foundation that it isn't that simple, and that the degradation of search was brought on internally.

Check it out here or wherever you get your podcasts!

Four years ago I went back to college to finish my degree after a two decade break. There was a lot of days like this writing papers and posts on my iPad during every available break and downtime. Tomorrow I do a “grad walk” and close out that portion of my life. My wife, kids, sibling, and parents will all be there. In a world that’s not so great right now, this is an amazingly bright spot for me and my family.

An iPad is propped up on a keyboard, displaying text and articles. The iPad screen shows a discussion post on the left and an article from Smithsonian on the right.

You've probably seen me talk about nominating people for PSF Fellow Membership a bunch in the last year (e.g. jonafato.com/2024/10/31/psf-fe). My post today is to remind you that the next due date for nominations is during PyCon US next month (python.org/psf/fellows/#:~:tex)! This is a great opportunity to use some of that conference energy to nominate folks you see doing the kind of work that advances the mission of the PSF.

Thâu-chi̍t pái chhì chòe tùi-chheng siang si̍t giâ (Thâu-ke A ê tāi-piáu chok),

M̄-koh oân-choân bōe-sái. siuⁿ kè koàn-sì chòe tōa-sòe si̍t (su-hū ê tāi-piáu chok).

---

Góa kā su-hū kóng chit kiāⁿ tāi-chì.

Su-hū "Chih-chài lí bōe-tiâu, ài chòe ē kàu chi̍t-ē tio̍h piàn-ōaⁿ beh chòe ê tô͘, lo̍h tiám, pí-lē, koh su-iàu kì ē tiâu, sui-liân góa ka-kī thiaⁿ--tio̍h sī chiok sim-sek--ê."

:blobpeek:
