Happy pride to anyone else who before they came out was like, “Oh I’m just a really good ally. I really care about those gays and their rights. It just makes me so mad how they aren’t treated equally. I’m just really viscerally empathetic”

Country restrictions on apps are dumb.

It doesn't matter that I'm in Canada, standing in the grocery store for which the app is supposed to be used and about to pay for my groceries with Canadian dollars. No, you can't install the app. It's not available in your country. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Come on! I get why geolocking exists. Countries have different laws and maybe you don't want to deal with all the intricacies of running an international app. But come on! It's a coupon clipping app! 🙄

i don't know why but i enjoy reading about specific annoyances that people in other countries have. like how in the UK, coke is very slightly more expensive than other soft drinks due to a sugar levy, meaning that swapping from a sprite to a coke at maccas adds something like £0.18 to the cost.

after weeks of reconnaissance of the arr slash germany subreddit, i have struck gold: i've learned that many german companies and especially government bodies send almost everything via physical mail. people talk about having their neighbours check their mail for them when they go on a one (1) week holiday because so much time sensitive communication is only sent in writing.

deutsche post offers a service where they'll open and scan all your letters and email them to you as PDFs. most companies use a similar service, be it the deutsche post one or a commercial equivalent.

the following is therefore a common occurrence in germany:

  • government computer generates a PDF about taxes or whatever
  • MailCo prints the PDF and mails it to hans
  • a few days pass
  • duetsche post opens hans' letter and scans it to a PDF, which is emailed to hans
  • hans reads the email and types up a PDF in response
  • hans goes to PrintCo, prints the PDF, takes it to the post office, and sends it to the govt
  • a few days pass
  • MailCo receives the letter and scans it to a PDF, which is then emailed to the tax office

i cannot write a witty statement or even a cheap stereotype joke that would make the described series of events funnier.

@pathunstromPiper Thunstrom

It's the stages of grief.

"I'm done, it just needs tests."

"Hmm. This line is really hard to cover. Maybe I can just add a coverage skip and work it out with the reviewer?"

"Damnit. It should work. It *DID* work before I started fixing it to be testable."

"It's not done. It's never going to be done."

"Okay maybe I need to just, reconsider the architecture and start over."

So I made my thread full of ActivityPub jokes social.coop/@cwebber/114621311

And a few people said they liked it but they wish someone would explain some of the jokes they didn't get

I am giving you real, earnest permission. If you want to reply to each post, explaining the joke behind it, I endorse it, as long as you use the tag

My latest project is code-named "Total Reprint." I ported The Print Shop (1986) to ProDOS and made it hard-drive-installable. Then I made some other improvements, like live previews of third-party graphics and borders. It's bundled with every graphic, border, and font that Broderbund ever released, plus hundreds of other openly licensed graphics that I back-ported from modern artists.

Come to INIT HELLO in July for the product launch. <init-hello.org/>

I did a number of not entirely wise things today. One of them was seeing if I could bike home from the Humber valley by going east along Eglinton. Result: no. Not advised. Eglinton has some nice new bike infrastructure out there, but it doesn't go all the way, it stops abruptly, Eglinton paving is terrible after it stops, and just as importantly, Eglinton eastbound from the Humber has hills. More than one.

Well, I live and learn, although I'd have preferred not at the back end of a 100+ km day.
