What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Monday:「

@lcamtuflcamtuf :verified: :verified: :verified: Yeah, Infinity doesn't exist. It's a concept that is useful for talking about, well, asymptotic situations. :D

That's the point. An asymptote does not reach the finite number it approaches, but we like to talk about it as if it really happened. It's like if we had a word for the day when "Free Beer Tomorrow" actually gets you a free beer.

🔥 Bonfire Social 1.0 release candidate has landed!

Curious about what the fediverse could look like with real community control?

Try out features like custom feeds, nested discussions, shared profiles, circles, and boundary-based permissions — then let us know what breaks or needs improvement.

More details and video demos: bonfirenetworks.org/posts/bonf

What if social networks served people in all their diverse complexity — instead of the streamlined simplicity of big platforms?

Bonfire Social is our first app: built for meaningful connection and conversation – community-governed spaces you can make your own.

It’s part of a modular framework that empowers communities to build the tools they need — and shape how they work and feel.

@stefanoStefano Marinelli I wrote software for 35 years... lots and lots of stuff. I disliked "plumbing" data to move it from disc to network to app, changing formats, etc. I wouldn't worry too much about AI doing that because its just tedious and deterministic.

But, I would be surprised if AI can create a novel, working solution to new problems that it wasn't trained on. I think of writing code as a translation process from a mind with an unambiguous idea into a language that can be understood by a computer. It really doesn't matter how good a system or person is at translation if they don't know what they are trying to say.

So, I'm skeptical that AI can create new systems well, or at all. But, it can displace many people whose software jobs were little more than data plumbing . I think those jobs are going away, because engineers cost a lot of money to employ. They are a prime target for cost reduction. Rote coding is dying quickly, I think.

Happy to announce, that there'll be a talk about my project at the Dutch Day 2025!

In "The Art of Balance – Dynamic Load Management in Proxmox with ProxLB", @formorer (from our company @credativdecredativ GmbH speaks about the opportunities by integrating such solutions into your Proxmox cluster!

Thanks to the Tuxis Team for providing us this opportunity!

Feel free to join the Dutch Proxmox Day - 25.09.2025!
