"Technology can't solve social problems", first of all: bullshit. Iodized salt and fluoridated water, they count and they are miracles. Vaccines count and they are miracles. Modern logistics are a miracle, tap water is a miracle and all of these things are technologies.

Technology can't solve problems _when powerful people don't want them solved_. But technology in the hands of the people can absolutely solve social problems, the questions are only about who's in the way.

yea sorry im not touching the "dont use ai even if your employers are forcing it down your throat" post. sure okay it didn't explicitly state that but have you read the news lately? Shopify (or was it some other conglomerate tech company) requires people to prove they can't fill in a position with ai before they can get new hires. the job market fucking sucks right now you can't just pick and choose. people with CVs that make my expertise look like amateur hour are struggling to get any follow up on job listings. this is quite literally the time you sit down and realize that all consumption under capitalism is unethical.

Every Linux distro I've ever used presents updates wrong IMO. Stop making me go to the app store to do system updates. System updates belong in the system settings and app updates belong in the app stores. Every other OS works this way. I don't go to the Google Play store or Apple App Store or (shutters) Microsoft App Store to install updates to my system. So why is every Linux distro sending me to their equivalent for it? It might be a minor thing but it's a pet peeve of mine. Especially with flatpak for user apps if I search for updates I don't also want to wait for the app center to search through all my system for updates too. And I don't wanna wait for looking for app updates when I'm trying to update my OS.

I'm glad to announce the release of version 2.78 of #snac, the simple, minimalistic #ActivityPub instance server written in C. It includes the following changes: Hashtag following also allow URLs to RSS feeds of ActivityPub objects (like e.g. https://mastodon.social/tags/ThankYouTuesday). TL;DR recent events texting/webpaging? an ex is probably still not a great idea

I saw some blocks and ended up writing a lot about them.

But y'know, decided to save that locally rather than share it online.

There are reasons for that, but if folks within that community are that upset by some mild disparagements about their apparently preferred programming language, no doubt being called out publicly on the language's much more egregious disconnects would only cause me a lot more grief and I still question whether they would learn the lessons that I had to learn so painfully so long ago that I would hope that they're obvious, but they clearly aren't.

What a kerfuffle!

Meanwhile, I did go out to that rave last Saturday.

Saw someone whom I haven't seen in I don't remember how long and chit chatted a bit.

Saw ThugShells ever so briefly and she apparently remembered me and gave me a couple of hugs which was nice before she went back to the stage to emcee!

I was very much an AC Transit bound "pumpkin" that night though and when the deejay on the roof went dead air (like, what? No transition to someone else spinnin? Maybe they were worried about neighbors and noise complaints after a certain hour?) I waited around for a while and decided that I didn't want to be cooped up in the increasingly hot indoors so decided to cut my losses and made for a hasty escape to the bus stop rather than a much longer walk later if I had stayed particularly since I had to work the next morning.

I spotted a beloved ex as I was leaving and she was engrossed in a conversation with someone else so I decided not to interrupt her.

I did text her later, and she replied later still.

And responding to that has taken up so much of my time and energy and attention in the intervening days? I split out the response into 4 web pages (starting shorter and going progressively more down into my emotional and mental depths with more words if she was up for it, with warnings interleaved as a result) and linked to that with a gift certificate to a vegan restaurant near her parent's place that I had wanted to gift her for her birthday a couple of months ago before my car went kaput, making going to the restaurant to get a gift card kind of problematic. Turned out, after I had rented a car and looked up the restaurant's hours on Wednesday? They have online gift cards, which saved me a drive; but also made me feel stupid for not looking into that back in April. Ah well.

I have no idea how any of that will go over. I am not optimistic. It still seemed worth at least making an effort, but I don't know whether to trust my judgement most of the time when it comes to affairs of the heart, I mostly seem to get heart broken in the long run. With her, the heart break was long ago, but it still feels as if there's a lot left unresolved.

I hadn't realized he suffered a stroke last year! I hope he's on the mend and was heartened to read that there was a lot of community outpouring of support including a pretty successful fundraising effort (though no doubt more would be helpful depending on how down and out he is) Curious to see how the evening goes.
