What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

One for Bookstodon:
Stephen King's It starts with this:
"The terror, which would not end for another twenty-eight years – if it ever did end – began, so far as I know or can tell..."
My question is, who is the narrator? The "I"? It's been a couple of years since I read the book and I've only read it once, so maybe it says and I've forgotten.
Is it Mike? Or King sort of doing a Tolkien? Or something else?
I'm fine with spoilers obviously but probably best content warn them for other people.

sorry no cw or hashtags on this one, I have been doing my best but tbh just “not being unconscious” needs a cw at this point. We need a tattoo on the inside of our eyelids with an “are you sure?” interstitial for when you try to open them when waking up

Good morning! just a regular lazy Sunday morning in 2025, time to make coffee and leisurely survey the news to check the essentials, and see if:

- my carton of $2/ea eggs need to be in the trash because they’re going to kill my family
- the air quality is going to be unbreathably bad today because of wildfires
- the air quality is going to be unbreathably bad because of tear gas
- the US is (still?) under martial law

Truly the origins of the public mental health crisis are a mystery

Another Post so I can pin it:

When I post about a topic, there are usually current circumstances or a current event related to it.

I rarely just post about a topic, because it's just on my mind.

A rant/complaint is usually related to something that happened recently.

APx is finally available on crates.io / docs.rs

https://docs.rs/apx_sdk/latest/apx_sdk/

This is an ActivityPub library used internally in Mitra and in other my projects.

Unlike some other ActivityPub libraries, this library is low-level. It doesn't restrict what databases or frameworks could be used, and doesn't care about object types or properties. There are only URIs, keys, signatures, JSON documents and HTTP requests.
It also contains primitives for building nomadic applications (FEP-ef61).

The license is AGPL-3, but I might consider changing it to a more permissive one.

There was software before Bill Atkinson, and there was software after Bill Atkinson. The fact that the latter is nothing like the former is in large part due to his genius.

Apple, please consider renaming the Apple Design Awards after Bill. It would be a fitting and timely honor.

it was apparently BPPV time this morning, not as severe as it was when i first got it 8 years ago, but also weird is that two half-assed epley moves seem to have subsided it...still too scared to do a full blown fly all the way down to try to tempt it out

„Retention of data by service providers for criminal proceedings“

Hier kann man bis zum 18. Juni 2025 Feedback abgeben: Have Your Say

Was ist geplant?

Lobbyismus deluxe.

Was kann man tun?

Einfach Feedback abgeben, geht in 2 Minuten.

My feedback to the EU regarding the newly proposed law forcing all websites to plaintext store everything users do or write for law enforcement.

This may be the dumbest law the EU has proposed as of yet, and it already attempted chat control and article 13 / 11, so this says a lot!

Not only have providers complained for decades about the cost of storing so much user data, of which 99.99999% won't ever be used, but also does law enforcement rarely need this kind of data, and by the time they've legally gained access to it, it won't be stored anymore.

It's a horrid invasion of our privacy, but the perfect tool for fascist regimes, for whom we are paving the way with this!

If you only invite corporate spyware lobbyist orgs to draft a law, this is the result. Peter Thiel couldn't have written a better proposal.

Stop this law if you wish for any citizen of this continent to respect you as an institution!

For the record, I've been emdashng and ellipsing since before the collaborative context collapse, so if you ban me for that, your fucking loss.

If you really wanna know it’s me, you’ll see me endashing numerical ranges 9–5 and also outside business hours.

Happy 30th birthday to . I wrote a history of it several years ago: “If CGI scripts were the start of interactive programming on the web, then PHP was the natural next step — at least on the server-side. Just a month after Brendan Eich created the JavaScript scripting language at Netscape, an independent developer from Canada named Rasmus Lerdorf released the first version of a toolset he called Personal Home Page Tools (PHP Tools).” cybercultural.com/p/1995-php-q
