What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

OK Fedifriends, I need your help with some complex ActivityPub stuff.

Mastodon won't show a list of followers for @coloursColours Bot

It has an orderedcollection at colours.bots.edent.tel/followe which paginates properly.

The mimetype and JSON are all correct, I think.

You can check out the source code at gitlab.com/edent/activity-bot/

What magical incantation do I need to do to help Mastodon see the details of the account's followers?

Feel free to reply here or on the repo.

Latest in sea trials. An old 12v trolling motor provides propulsion. A pico is always-on and runs the basics, sensors, h-bridges and such.

An RPi4 will be the main autonomy hub to enable detailed mapping and surveys and such. But for now I can just push buttons in and move it around.

I built it almost totally out of scrap and epoxy. What a delightful waste of time! 😜

P. S. Note the crew on the bridge.

Dear Fedi friends,

I'm really proud to share with you a video I made: "Introducing the Fediverse: a New Era of Social Media" https://news.elenarossini.com/fediverse-video/

In this 4-minute video I explain what the #fediverse is to people not familiar with it, mentioning some of its great features and benefits (interoperability, no ads, no surveillance...) and I set it in contrast to the world of Big Tech social platforms. I argue that, with the rise of Big Tech oligarchs and the current political climate, there has never been a better time to join the fediverse.

I hope you will enjoy this video and that you will find it useful (maybe as a tool to introduce your friends, family, colleagues, school administrators, local government officials to it).

The fediverse has truly changed my life, making me a better, more empowered digital citizen. I am endlessly grateful for it, so this is my contribution to the cause ❤️

I am also incredibly thankful for the work of @samaabergSamuel Aaberg and @patel.riyenThe Life of Tarzan who helped me bring my vision to life with their amazing cinematography skills and their assistance throughout the process, providing brilliant feedback to the script / edits from the POV of fedi newbies.

And I was also moved by the generous help of people of the Fediverse who volunteered to translate the script into many foreign languages: @janJan Dytrych🇨🇿🇺🇦 @fritjofFritjof :emacs: :ardour: @erikkempErik Kemp 🇪🇺🟥 @sknob @severin @clabruClaudio @tarcisiosurdiTarcísio Surdi ⁂ :verified_sc: @hongminhee洪 民憙 (Hong Minhee) @danielcasanueva @ainaliJan Ainali @naclyPen

Lastly, I'm thankful for the opportunity I had to premiere the video last week at #FediForum - thank you @j12tJohannes Ernst and @anca

The video is up on my self-hosted PeerTube instance (thank you @yunohostYunoHost :neopossum_box:) and for now it is unlisted as I have no idea how my VPS will hold up. I also included an alternate location in the blog post.

I hope you'll enjoy it! It's been a real labor of love (a month of full time work on it)... I see it as my love letter to the fediverse 💌

Edit/update: THANK YOU for all the people who volunteered to have their avatar show up in the last shot. There were 750+ submissions and only 135 spots - sorry I couldn't include everyone 🥲

Dear Fedi friends,

By now you might have seen the post announcing the release of my promotional video for the Fediverse. But in case you have boosts turned off, here we go: news.elenarossini.com/fedivers

I posted about it this morning from my account because I have a 5000 character limit there. And I had so many people to thank for their help. It really takes a village.

Thank you for all the wonderful feedback so far ❤️

New from 404 Media: Delta, United, American etc don't want you to know they sold your flight data to DHS. The country's airlines sell bulk names and flight itineraries to DHS to be searched without a warrant. Contract tells DHS to not reveal where this data came from 404media.co/airlines-dont-want

A few weeks back I read on Mastodon that the US Dept of Health and Human Services was getting rid of COVID tests. This is bad for all the reasons, but some enterprising government employee did a program where you could fill out a form and get anywhere from 300-3000 COVID tests (unexpired) sent to your home. I figured why not try? Last week I got seven boxes of COVID tests delivered to my porch. I posted to a local mailing list and I am getting them pointed towards my community. Thanks Mastodon!

My front porch with five bags and two larger boxes which all have people's names written on them in big block letters. The bags contain COVID tests.a bench inside my house with seven large boxes full of COVID tests. They say "intelliswab" on the side of them and are stacked tightly but still take up a lot of room.

Mistral's first reasoning LLM - Magistral - was released today and is available in two sizes, an open weights (Apache 2) 24B model called Magistral Small and an API/hosted only model called Magistral Medium. My notes here, including running Small locally with Ollama and accessing Medium via my llm-mistral plugin simonwillison.net/2025/Jun/10/

Here's my writeup of , in which I ask the question: is the fediverse making meaningful progress vs. centralized platforms? The post includes @_elenaElena Rossini ⁂'s excellent video and has discussion of @cwebberChristine Lemmer-Webber's presentation, Bounce (by @quillmatiqAnuj Ahooja & @snarfed.orgRyan Barrett), Surf (by @mikeMike McCue & @marciMarci McCue), Channels.org (by @michaelMichael Foster & @newsmastNewsmast Foundation team), & Bandwagon (by @benpateBen Pate 🤘🏻). Thx also @j12tJohannes Ernst & @anca for FediForum. The headline is via Christine: "we can’t succeed without joy." thenewstack.io/bringing-joy-ba
