What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Uh ho. I was catching up with my mentions during a long train ride and I just found a series of truly abusive replies with threats, horrible, violent language, swastikas (!!!) all coming from the same instance. One even included a violent video showing a woman being harmed.

I took screenshots before blocking.

How does #FediBlock work? And how do you block entire instances when you are on mobile? (Traveling for the next few days).

The instance these messages came from is truly truly bad, I feel like they should be called out and blocked en masse 😰

Update: it’s more than one instance. I’ve found additional abusive messages with violent and racist, misogynistic rhetoric, from 5-6 different instances. It’s like I have 4Chan in my mentions. Screenshot + block 🔁

Update no.2: thank you for your suggestions! See, I’m the admin of this instance, so I can just copy and paste the names of the abusive instances in my GoToSocial dashboard and easily block them on the spot. Still, I’ll make sure to mention these abusive instances to FediBlock. It’s the first time I’m the target of abuse and these messages were really awful. Now if you could send me photos of your cute pets, you’d do me a favor.

Update no.3: success! Even if I’m on a train traveling across countries and on my iPad, I was able to log onto my GoToSocial admin dashboard… and start blocking entire domains. Self-hosting is truly the most empowering thing 🥲

Fifty four years after the Pentagon Papers were released, the Espionage Act is still weaponized against journalists and sources under the guise of national security.

FPF's Lauren Harper explains how this outdated law threatens press freedom, especially under the Trump administration.

Because free online spaces haven’t served us. They’ve exploited us.

The lie of “free” has cost us connection, safety, truth, and trust.

Platforms built on ad dollars and surveillance have made it effortless for trolls, bad actors, and harmful agendas to thrive — because there’s no real cost to causing harm.

Why is PWO a paid membership community?

Good morning Fedi friends!

I'm currently packing my suitcase - destination: Amsterdam! Tomorrow I have the great honor of speaking on a panel at @publicspaces about the Fediverse: conference.publicspaces.net/en

And right after, in the same room, there will be this superb panel: "No Musk, Zuckerberg or Trump can shut us down" feat. @bjoernstaBjörn Staschen and @andypiper (just reading the title makes me erupt in applause).

Wishing everyone a great day! 🌞

I just deleted the last news app off my tablet. I think that at peak, I had about 7, including RTÉ, BBC, Irish Times, TheJournal.ie, The Guardian.

In every case, the app

1/ added no useful functions over a web browser
2/ omitted some key browser functions, e.g. zoom, select&copy, open in new tab
3/ generated annoying notifications

I was surprised. These apps are expensively built and heavily promoted. Yet in my experience they are crap.

Have I missed something? Does anyone use news apps?

Your "is an incredibly sophisticated form of pattern matching, so advanced that it can mimic the output of human reasoning for a narrow band of problems. But when tested in a controlled way, its fragility is exposed. It lacks the robust, generalizable, and symbolic logic that underpins true intelligence.

We’re seeing the limits of very expensive that breaks when it matters most."

Switched my launchers from fuzzel to rofi-wayland on my setup as it shows all the icons whereas the current fuzzel had stopped showing the firefox icon and some others. Plus it means that I can play with the rofi script mode rather than using the dmenu option. Just to try and keep my mind active you know. I also pushed my WIP changes to my git repo though if anyone is interested. 😜
