We've published our new terms of service for mastodon.social and mastodon.online today, effective July 1. The same template will be available as an option to other servers in the upcoming #Mastodon 4.4 update. There are no changes to our policies or operations, just clarifications, e.g. if you upload content to be displayed to other users, you give us permission to display it to other users, but you keep all rights to it. We also explicitly prohibit scraping, even though it was never allowed.

@dvandalDaniel V. Sorry to hop in, but on first gloss, the phrase "in ways that are consistent with your use of the Instance," is doing a lot of work. It's also working in tandem with the right to deletion enshrined in the Privacy Policy. It would seem (although it could/should be more explicit), that the termination of the grant is similar to Twitter's: upon the deletion of your account, whereupon continued hosting of your content would be inconsistent with your use of the Instance—and a violation of multiple privacy laws, depending on jurisdiction.

I'm not sure it's an unreasonable way to phrase it - the intention is to say things like: in addition to storing a copy of your Content on our own server, we will send a copy of your content to every instance that has someone who follows you if you post the set to public status and will be visible to anyone who visits your profile; if you mark the post as followers only, etc. I suspect that will change over time as the features of mastodon change too... It does require people to have an understanding of where their data goes when they use Mastodon, and quite frequently, they do not - perhaps this is where you were going?

If you use GTS: What does "using" GTS, from the web frontend², look like to you? Would you mind showing me a screenshot?

² My understanding is GTS supports multiple web frontends in theory. I don't know if multiple exist.
