British MPs have voted to decriminalise abortion, marking the biggest step forward in reproductive rights in almost 60 years.

(Abortion was previously legal in limited circumstances in the UK, but during COVID police began charging women under a law from 1861: they can no longer be prosecuted.)

«Every context in which we speak of “research outputs” today is a misguided application of industrial practices to science. We can, of course, discuss and also assess a researcher’s contributions to the web of science, but not by counting or weighing them»

Yes, this, so much @khinsenKonrad Hinsen!

Google Meet has two great features that don't work well together:

1) I can minimize my own face in a Meet so I'm not distracted by my bad hair, and

2) if I switch away from the Meet tab, it makes a mini window that I can put near the camera so I am looking at people and it doesn't take too much screen space.

BUT: the mini window still has my face... Why!? Can I do anything about this?

Well... new instance, new introduction.

Hi, I'm hexaheximal. I'm a software developer by day... and... uhh... also by night.

I use desktop as well as (more specifically ) quite extensively, and enjoy doing so.

Occasionally I try making things other than software projects as well, but not as frequently. I also have a blog at hexaheximal.com/blog, although I don't use it often.

숩 올 샐러드(soup or salad)지.

수업이 시작되었는데도 안오길래
들어가서 "수퍼샐러드 나와라." 했더니 다들 빵터졌어요

This week's Other People's Music is mostly from the Other Place, but our own @stefanStefan Bohacek does offer up some tasty, spacey disco house. Plus gritty cyberpunk, futuristic breaks, microtonal guitar & cosmic ambient from artists residing elsewhere (but still worth a listen).

@lcamtuflcamtuf :verified: :verified: :verified: nice post. To me, the crux of the issue is with the concept of limit itself. "Converges at infinity" is really bad framing (just like defining the derivative in terms of tangents is a missed chance).
We can see that a sequence of numbers goes somewhere without needing to bring in infinity.

We've released the second beta of 4.4 - including some UI fine tuning and new updates, additional integration for Fediverse Auxiliary Service Providers, and more progress on support for incoming quote posts. Please give it a try on your instance, if you can - we appreciate feedback. 🪧

Next up will be a Release Candidate, and then the full release itself 🤞🏻

it's so bizarre seeing really simple poster/flyer designs that would be trivial to make by hand being made by AI, and the icons are all weird and it's full of bizarre typos, i do not get it. I've been making flyers since I was 13, it's not hard...

Morning my pet. This is your reminder that if you can imagine a better future, you can make it happen. It can be big, but it can also be as small as a breakfast waiting for you in the morning because you prepped it last night. And if you beg me just right, I might even share my morning with you. Because you deserve a happy morning. Good pet. ❤️

@smallcircles🫧 socialcoding.. well, eh, we're on the brink of it.

Prior to the Iran war, polls had shown seven mandates (out of 120) going to a newly-found Reservists' party. Tens of thousands of families are near-bankruptcy due to a parent serving in the military in a 620-day-long war.

Over 70 buildings were destroyed in Bat Yam a few days ago, meaning hundreds are homeless.

The government is consistently ignoring Arabs' and Bedouins' needs and rights.

@rauschmaAxel Rauschmayer Glad you asked! 😂

The simplest answer would be:

`this.querySelector("button")…`

which works when `this` is the custom element your JS code is housed in.

```html
<my-ui-element>
<button>Click me!</button>
</my-ui-element>
```

For defensive coding, you can scope your selector even further:

`this.querySelector(":scope > button”)`

so it doesn't bug out when some other button of a child component shows up.

Handling multiple buttons though? There are still options besides using id

I hate saying things which seem blindingly obvious, but when Famous People™ such as Theo on YouTube make these basic mistakes, I wonder. 🧐

So here you go:

`document.querySelector("# my-dumb-button").addEventListener(...)` is completely obsolete in the year 2025.

Never do that again please. You don't need to!

If you're wondering “well, what should I do instead?”, check the comments; we'll talk about what to do instead. Apparently it will BLOW YOUR MIND! 😂

Update 3: You can find my PostMortem here: infosec.exchange/@masek/114721

Update 2: As far as I can tell, the servers that caused the leak belonged to the DOJ in Montana. We reached them in two ways:

  • Through this post we got contact to the vendor of the software. With the Serial# (in the extraction reports) they could identify whom to call.
  • A friend had a contact in one of the affected police department and they reached out to the DOJ.

Thanks to this community I was also able to get a contact within the FBI. Furthermore some media contacted me and a lot of Mastodon users provided me with additional contacts.

Event though I contacted the AG in Monatana and one PD, no one has reached out to me from the DOJ side.

Update 1: Leak is closed. Will write more tomorrow. Thank you to everyone who helped.

Phone forensics

Usually law enforcement is very secretive about them analyzing the phones of suspects.

But a forensic lab in is extremely transparent about it. They put the dump of every phone on a public share. Everyone with Internet access can access those dumps.

While I am usually a proponent of government transparency, this takes it a bit too far even for my taste.

Every phone dump is one directory and some case names can be easily connected to crime & death headline news in the U.S.

So for one case I am pretty sure, that I can even say which Sheriff is responsible for that one of the investigations.

I sent that Sheriff an email, i sent him a text message and I even spoke on his voicebox. I even sent him the extraction report from Graykey.

It is really frustrating that I get no response at all. The leak is still open.

The security researcher that found the leak also tried some contacts but had as little success as I do.

I personally believe that this leaks even constitutes a federal crime. Some cases have names ending on CSAM. The security researcher stayed away from any of those and I did not access the files on that server at all.

So does anybody know someone within the that would give a shit about that. I am getting very tired.
