What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

A while back I followed an initial small group of landscape photographers and then a bunch of the other photographers (landscape and otherwise) that they boosted photos from, and now my fediverse feed is at least half nice photographs. I can recommend, especially if you find these trying times in your social media feed.

(This is not original to me, I saw @dwenius mentioning doing it and decided it was a good idea.)

Someone who dreams about "the next internet"

An interconnected self-configuring, redundant, local-first, transport layer agnostic, delay & disruption tolerant network, owned, grown, & maintained (for the common good) by communities & individuals, forever providing digital sovereignity, forward secrecy, privacy, supporting being extended offline and moving from place to place, without any permanent record, blockchain, middlemen, or any (global) authority getting in the way

Assuming this is cold water and not a hot spring, the metaphor in my mind is thus:

It's incredibly anxiety producing to start, terribly uncomfortable and difficult to get used to at the beginning, and you want to give up immediately. But if you keep at it you get used to it. It soon becomes incredibly satisfying, something you start looking forward to, and turns out to be very good for you in the long run.

Flood Advisory, Lower Matanuska Valley, 2025-06-22 08:30 AKDT.

WHAT...Flooding caused by snowmelt and channel shift.

WHERE...Matanuska River near Butte, AK.

WHEN...Until noon AKDT Wednesday.

IMPACTS...Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 817 AM AKDT, Warm temperatures and bank erosion have led to high water breaking through the banks of the Matanuska River between the Old Glenn Highway and the River in the Maud Road area. Water levels are expected to be near peak levels Saturday evening and then very slowly recede over the next few days as temperatures drop and lessens the snow melt in the mountains upriver. However, since this is largely driven by new erosion along the riverbank, persons in this area should continue to monitor the situation. - For Matanuska River at Palmer/Butte: At 7:30am the stage was 24200.0 cfs. Forecast: A crest around 24400.0 cfs is expected around 4:00pm Sunday. - http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood

How could evolution produce immortal beings? The more "immortal" an entity is, the more likely it is to lose the race with quickly evolving short-lived entities driven by natural selection.

So an immortal being would have to be able to self-modify in order to remain competitive. But that's only possible if it's able to run internal models of itself and subject them to simulated natural selection.

In other words, create mortal beings in its own image.

youtube.com/watch?v=KlZ-QmPteq

@mcc hi! Sorry for the rant but I thought you might be interested in knowing this. I remember checking this channel a few months ago. I do not know what is the consensus at the moment but back then concerns were raised that the group of people behind this channel are just uploading tons of AI generated music.

I remember they were more or less open about it --feel free to check the video and channel descriptions, IIRC they said they were able to upload almost daily because they used public but also AI-generated samples and tracks (i.e. melody, bass, drums, ...) and that they would later mix&match and edit to generate master files.

There were some people on reddit discussing this --again I don't know how things are now but I found it quite sad. Because, if one is to believe what they say, it looks like they have talent but this talent is sort of misplaced. Also why making so MUCH amount of music? Hijacking the algorithm? Have long frequent videos to put ads on and make money?

Still some of the tracks are absolute fire, I have quite mixed feelings...
