What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

[…] I have thought about hosting my own instance, and I think that I soon will — a combination of Proxmox, NixOS, coolify, yunohost […]

coolify combined with nixos might be more challenging than fun —

I already run stuff in Debian, so perhaps nix in Debian — it is a weird compromise, or is it?

"Coolify supports several Linux distributions:
Debian-based (e.g., Debian, Ubuntu)
Redhat-based (e.g., CentOS, Fedora, Redhat, AlmaLinux, Rocky, Asahi)
SUSE-based (e.g., SLES, SUSE, openSUSE)
Arch Linux
Alpine Linux
Raspberry Pi OS 64-bit (Raspbian)"

EDIT2: PeerTube is no longer using WebTorrent for Redundancy - see thread below

PeerTube has RSS feeds with WebTorrent links. You can grab those links and seed whatever content you wish using a WebTorrent client without having to install an entire PeerTube instance.

What does this do? It helps alleviate some of the streaming costs of servers and ensures a smoother experience for everyone on the decentralized web.

Yay for open source platforms!

webtorrent.io/desktop/

A webtorrent client (the only webtorrent client?) that allows you to be a peer and seed data for the videos.

Analysis: "How Democratic Party Leaders Quietly Support Trump’s March to War With Iran"

"Some Democrats are fighting to stop war with Iran, but party leaders are silently acquiescing or, worse, supporting an attack."

Schumer, eg, is not only supporting Trump, but "was goading the administration to be tough on Iran & not make any side deals without...Netanyahu’s approval."

Energy and AI Observatory
The IEA’s Energy and AI Observatory provides up-to-date data and analysis on the growing links between the energy sector and artificial intelligence (AI). The new and fast-moving field of AI requires a new approach to gathering data and information, and the Observatory aims to provide regularly updated data and a comprehensive view of the implications of AI on energy demand (energy for AI) and of AI applications for efficiency, innovation, resilience and competitiveness in the energy sector (AI for energy). This first-of-a-kind platform is developed and maintained by the IEA, with valuable contributions of data and insights from the IEA’s energy industry and tech sector partners, and complements the IEA's Special Report on Energy and AI.

One of our achievements today in the operating department in Gaza, despite the internet blackout, was saving the life of a father of six who was hit by an airstrike while on his way to get a kilo of flour (6 loaves), which now costs $30 in Gaza.
The surgery lasted 3 hours. He is now in stable condition and will soon be discharged so he can feed his children.
We are in need of any support — even a kind word or the cost of a cup of coffee.

The Fediverse Report will now be known as Connected Places, still keeping a. weekly fediverse report along with other decentralized platforms in separate newsletters.

This makes sense to me, as I have followed Laurens work for a few years now. They have never been ONLY covering the fediverse - Nostr, Farcaster, Bluesky - were always fully investigated, understood and reported on. It's one of the reason I subscribed early on.

Now the name fits!

A few days ago I spent a little bit of time looking at , to see if it can replace YouTube yet.
I tried and failed to set up an instance on my own server, because it doesn't have enough RAM to keep up with transcoding.
I made an account on cuddly.tube: @christianp@cuddly.tubeChristian Lawson-Perfect, and had a go at live streaming there but I don't think it kept up. I also uploaded a short video: cuddly.tube/w/sMqkvBnzeLk1UtY4.

Are there any PeerTube instances that can reliably live stream? I don't mind paying my way in.
