the Schmitt trigger, the one used in basically all digital electronics, is inspired by a biological object? More specifically, _the_ squid giant axon?? I can't believe I'm only learning this now despite hearing a lot of things about Schmitt triggers _and_ squid giant axons!

Hello Fediverse!

After a few months of lurking I am writing my introduction post (as is custom I am told).
My name is Leon (he/him - they/them), I am based in Berlin, studying Ethnography, where I also work as a student counselor, and am part of a mutual aid meal train project for disabled people here in Berlin. I am interested in knowledge production (like on here!), music cultures, societal visions of a different way of living together, activism, and trains (they are fun). Happy to be here^^

MicroTimes (1985): "[They] met a couple of years ago at a party ... They became good friends before they started in partnership to produce software." <theprintshop.club/2024/07/26/t>

@LaineNooney, "The Apple II Age" (2023): yeah I interviewed them personally. They were a gay couple. "Both had relocated to the Bay Area ... to explore their nascent identity in what was then a vibrant locus for the gay liberation movement in the United States."

Happy Pride! 🌈

It is 2025 and when I plug an external keyboard into MacOS it completely forgets the remapping on the laptop keyboard and I hateses it.

Anyone know if I upgrade to Seqoia, if this fixes anything? Is Apple Intelligence Intelligency enough to wander into my keyboard settings like it's a yard full of rakes?

Why don't I go to conferences anymore? It's not worth getting sick, and the only thing worse than getting sick is getting sick in a foreign country. So tired of it!

I might go to a conference again in a few years, but it's going to be very rare. I miss some aspects, but then I hear about everyone getting covid or the flu, and I'm like, "My god I'm so glad I didn't go".

After spending a large part of the morning in a bomb shelter (while TRYING to pick up groceries), a large part of a missile did land a few hundred meters from where I was, but everything's fine. I even made it to my Zoom class on time.

One of the big conceptual questions that's unresolved in the is: Just what exactly is an instance for?

Yep, it's a separate installation of server software. But what exactly does instance 1 give me compared to instance 2?

Answer A: it makes no difference except on policy: who runs it, what are their TOS, moderation policy etc. The Local feed has no significance.

Answer B: Beyond that, it defines a community. The local feed is essential.

Which should it be?

I was on a new podcast called WTF Now. My episode is called How the internet went wrong. Sad title, but you will understand when you listen.

This is really back to my strong belief that we need regulation when it comes to user profiling. IMHO it should just be banned. Have a listen and let me know what you think!

Since 2016, the number of papers on mis/disinformation has skyrocketed. It's hard to imagine another phenomenon for which there exists such a complete dataset, but this field must label things as true, biased, etc., sticky concepts to define at scale. How can you label millions of tweets as true/false?

If we pick a paper and follow the provenance of its data, I think that we can learn about not just this field, but the role of data and computation in society.

Objectively, it's far more troubling that they're banning Toni Morrison and David Levithan and Art Spiegelman and any books that even hint at representing the right's Horsemen of the Apocalypse

But there's something so completely batshit about banning _Calvin and Hobbes_, a comic strip so family friendly that it ran uncensored in the most conservative newspapers in the country for more than a decade

Good post indicating how Avery Pennarun plans (hopes) to keep free of enshittification.

Also it's quite refreshing to have a CEO of a Bil$$ corp write so candidly about the topic on their personal blog. 👍👍
