Okay, it seems there are some #tailscale (or similar services) users here. Everything works great so far, tailscale serve + their services are easy to use. However, I'd like to get an understanding if it is possible to access my #homelab services without the tailscale client whenever I'm in my home lan network und with the tailscale client when I'm connected remotely - from the same https (sub-) domain. I have read that I need a public domain and a #reverseproxy for that (which I don't have in my current setup) - is this the right way to go?

Been thinking about setting up #Tailscale for accessing my #Synology off network. Just went to sign up, and you have to use a 3rd party SSO provider. I hate that. Why can't I just sign up with a bloody email address??

Everyone and their mother on Masto has and talks about #Tailscale and I don't know what it is so I go to their website and learn that Tailscale is a "a secure and private, identity-based, infrastructure agnostic network with a flexible topology, resilient networking, and a streamlined setup" and well you don't say !
"resilient networking" 🤭
Progress update for #Dropserver for September (finally!)
I write about Bubblewrap, sandboxing, #Tailscale in the real world, work on the Leftovers app, and the installation experience for ds-host (which will be separate blog post.)

Set up my wife with #tailscale on her phone: took 60 seconds.
Adding her tailscale ID as an auth method in the Leftovers app on Dropserver: 10 seconds. (Maybe less? It's literally one dropdown to select who the user is for this peer user on the tailnet. See screenshot)
A productive afternoon.
Shout out to #TsDProxy (Tailscale Docker Proxy). Such a neat tool and works wonderfully.
Please do yourself a favour and go check it out if you #selfhost services in #docker and proxy through #tailscale.
Ii was looking for this exact solution and couldn't really believe it when I found it.
My WordPress is talking via my ImageDescription Plugin to my home server. The home servers Traefik is proxy passing the requests via a TailScale tunnel to my Laptop running Ollama. Convoluted ... but it works :D
Yeah this is why keeping your self-hosted stuff off the public Internet is a really good move. It's why I put #Tailscale in #Dropserver, so that I can access my stuff without risking my instance to the "background radiation of the internet" (great term!)
Blog post: Progress report for #Dropserver for June and July.
I talk about how UI improvements came about for the #Tailscale node connection interface, and where things might go next now that Tailscale integration is done (or done enough for now at least).

requiem. @rqm@journal.bsd.cafe

For those who are adventurous enough to explore the non-http corners of the Internet, the Gemini protocol is a delightful experience to use. It has been around a number of years, making the biggest bang around the time when discontent with the web’s general demise started to reach current heights (so maybe around 2022).

My “capsule”, Vigilia, is self-hosted, and has been since its inception. It used to run on a disused Macbook Pro running Fedora Server, under our TV at home, but since […]

I'm working on a new blog post about my deployment of #Headscale and #Tailscale in my #homelab for early 2025. I will discuss the differences between a #VPN server and Tailscale, Headscale, Docker Compose configuration, #Headplane, access control through ACL configuration, integration with Nginx Proxy Manager, and more. Please note that I will not cover OIDC authentication yet.
Let me know if you have any specific questions or other topics you would like me to address.

Welp I finally got it done! #Dropserver's integration with #Tailscale has shipped.
Here is the docs page that shows you how to connect ds-host and your appspaces to your tailnet:
https://dropserver.org/docs/connect-tailnet
Here is the release:
https://github.com/teleclimber/Dropserver/releases/tag/v0.14.0
I think
@tailscale is transformative for home-hosting of personal apps. It takes so much of the pain away from the networking side of self-hosting. That's why I wanted to build a solid integration.
Next up I badly need to make it far easier to install and run ds-host.
But first, vacation.... 🛫😎
Good post indicating how Avery Pennarun plans (hopes) to keep #Tailscale free of enshittification.
Also it's quite refreshing to have a CEO of a Bil$$ corp write so candidly about the topic on their personal blog. 👍👍

I fiddle with Headscale and Ionscale, the open source alternative backplanes to #Tailscale to see if there is anything preventing them from working with Dropserver. A bit of a rough road there.
CI/CD shouldn't mean choosing between “works” and “secure.”

So it looks as though Tailscale treats any domain they don’t know as business domain.
As a result if you sign up with any email address [@]random-new-email-provider.example that they’ve never heard of, they’ll group you into one tailnet with all other users of that provider.

If you have used and loved #Tailscale, and you still like the product but want a sensible insurance option to reduce your exposure to potential #enshittification, what *hosted* options have you looked at as alternatives?
Part of the appeal of #Tailscale for me at least was that they provided a really thoughtful UX layer over some existing cool OSS tech like #wireguard.
Also, many of us have tried self-hosting and want to minimise what they self host if at all possible.
