Everyone and their mother on Masto has and talks about and I don't know what it is so I go to their website and learn that Tailscale is a "a secure and private, identity-based, infrastructure agnostic network with a flexible topology, resilient networking, and a streamlined setup" and well you don't say !

"resilient networking" ๐Ÿคญ

Yeah this is why keeping your self-hosted stuff off the public Internet is a really good move. It's why I put in , so that I can access my stuff without risking my instance to the "background radiation of the internet" (great term!)

Blog post: Progress report for for June and July.

I talk about how UI improvements came about for the node connection interface, and where things might go next now that Tailscale integration is done (or done enough for now at least).

A Self-hosted, BSD-native Gemini Protocol Server Stack

requiem. @rqm@journal.bsd.cafe

For those who are adventurous enough to explore the non-http corners of the Internet, the Gemini protocol is a delightful experience to use. It has been around a number of years, making the biggest bang around the time when discontent with the web’s general demise started to reach current heights (so maybe around 2022).

My “capsule”, Vigilia, is self-hosted, and has been since its inception. It used to run on a disused Macbook Pro running Fedora Server, under our TV at home, but since [โ€ฆ]

I'm working on a new blog post about my deployment of and in my for early 2025. I will discuss the differences between a server and Tailscale, Headscale, Docker Compose configuration, , access control through ACL configuration, integration with Nginx Proxy Manager, and more. Please note that I will not cover OIDC authentication yet.

Let me know if you have any specific questions or other topics you would like me to address.

My ACL map to limit the access between the Tailscale nodes.

Welp I finally got it done! 's integration with has shipped.

Here is the docs page that shows you how to connect ds-host and your appspaces to your tailnet:

Here is the release:

I think @tailscale is transformative for home-hosting of personal apps. It takes so much of the pain away from the networking side of self-hosting. That's why I wanted to build a solid integration.

Next up I badly need to make it far easier to install and run ds-host.

But first, vacation.... ๐Ÿ›ซ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Good post indicating how Avery Pennarun plans (hopes) to keep free of enshittification.

Also it's quite refreshing to have a CEO of a Bil$$ corp write so candidly about the topic on their personal blog. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

So it looks as though Tailscale treats any domain they donโ€™t know as business domain.

As a result if you sign up with any email address [@]random-new-email-provider.example that theyโ€™ve never heard of, theyโ€™ll group you into one tailnet with all other users of that provider.

How on earth did they think that was a good idea?!

If you have used and loved , and you still like the product but want a sensible insurance option to reduce your exposure to potential , what *hosted* options have you looked at as alternatives?

Part of the appeal of for me at least was that they provided a really thoughtful UX layer over some existing cool OSS tech like .

Also, many of us have tried self-hosting and want to minimise what they self host if at all possible.
