Take action! Protect VPN use in the UK VPNs help people to stay private and safe online. Young people use them to avoid harassment, or protect location data. Companies use them to make sure remote log-in to their networks are secure. Journalists, campaigners and whistle blowers use them to protect their work and themselves. But the Government wants to force people to verify their age when they buy a VPN. This will deter people from using VPNs to stay safe and secure online. Businesses that use virtual private networks to secure their computer systems are concerned that they could be inadvertently caught by government plans to restrict their use to people under 16. The government’s announcement to limit the use of VPNs by under 16s is part of a wider proposal to limit the use of social media by school-age children unveiled by the UK prime minister on Monday. However it is unclear how the proposals will impact businesses, including small companies, that rely on VPNs to secure their computers and to communicate securely. TechUK, which represents over 1000 tech companies, told Computer Weekly that the proposals didn’t appear to have been fully worked out yet and that it was hoping that more details would emerge in a government consultation due to be published next month. James Baker, a programme manager and campaigner at the Open Rights Group, said that Cybersecurity authorities including the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre, advocate the use of VPNs to enhance online safety.

I've tried Zen a few months ago and Floorp earlier than that, and they feel rough on my battery life, like Chromium feels, but without the extra web compatibility that Chromium browsers get me. I need something that Just Works and doesn't feel like it's trying to be flashy, but others may prefer it for their needs.

Some good news from Denmark! The government has withdrawn the proposal after just five days, claiming that the proposal was misunderstood and that banning VPN use was never the intention. In that case, the drafting was exceptionally bad, and withdrawing the proposal is clearly the right thing to do.

English translation of the highlighted part: The term ‘other technical solution’ should be understood broadly. The broad wording is intended to ensure that the proposed amendment covers any technical solution used to provide unauthorised access to media content. [..] For example, it will also be prohibited to use VPN connections to access media content that would otherwise not be available in Denmark, or to circumvent the blocking of illegal websites.

まあほとんどの機能は Chrome Extension として提供されてる Proton VPN 拡張によるものだから「VPN 内蔵」してるというふうに捉えない人もいるかもだけど、一応インストール初期からデフォルトで入ってはいるし、Vivaldi.net のアカウントでも Proton VPN にログインできるし、by Proton であるとはいえ、 :vivaldi_red: も VPN が内蔵されてるブラウザーと言っても差し支えはない気がする

Here's a totally off-the-cuff pitch for the web: I just want to be able to load a webpage from a swarm by leeching, and then click an "I approve" button if it looks non-sketchy and I want to seed the page. I want to bookmark magnet links to make human-readable URLs and allow collisions between actual names/content to be decided socially (e.g. click to accept a new version of this page from this new swarm). I don't want a bunch of new protocols. No for domain names or donations. No vibe-coded corporate-sponsored AI BS. No repos. Just give me the wild west with everything visible and no default seeding so that bad actors don't bother with it so much. Run it through a or something if you want privacy.

Tailscale을 비롯한 Wireshark 기반의 VPN 도구를 이번에 처음 접하게 되면서 "신세계"를 맛보고 있습니다.

저는 다양한 개발 환경을 테스트하고 학습하는 것을 선호하다보니 계속해서 여러 종류의 노트북이나 PC를 구입해서 사용해왔습니다. 그러다보니 관리 문제도 있고, 어딘가로 여행을 가거나 떠나야 할 일이 생기면 어떤 디바이스를 챙겨 가야 하는지가 상당한 고민이 되곤 했습니다.

그렇지만 인터넷만 붙어있으면 어디서든 동일 네트워크 상에 존재하는 것처럼 일관된 환경을 만들 수 있고, 모든 네트워크 송수신 트래픽이 암호화된 상태를 유지하고 있으며, 속도까지 빠르니 더할 나위 없이 좋습니다.

제 경우는 그래서, Surface Pro 8, Surface Laptop 7, GPU 달린 Intel 랩탑, 라즈베리 파이 4, 맥북, 아이폰, 아이패드, Azure VM, WSL 2 환경까지 매우 많은 디바이스와 가상 머신을 전부 단일 네트워크 환경에 붙여서 자유롭게 사용하고 있습니다.

만약 노트북과 데스크톱, NAS 등의 디바이스를 동시에 붙여서 사용해야 하는 것이 고민이라면 Wireshark나 Tailscale을 꼭 살펴보실 것을 권해드리고 싶습니다. 👍

There are a multitude of reasons for using a VPN, from concern about a site's known data selling and tracking habits, to not wanting someone knowing where you're at.

Legislators hate them, along with encryption, because they disrupt the state's ability to prosecute both its laws and its more nefarious desires.

Thanks to @s3phy again for helping me understand another area where IPv6 is broken in Linux desktop networking configuration tools: connecting to a SSH server to create a SOCKS proxy using the NetworkManager SSH plugin. That thing only checks if the gateway address is a valid IPv4 address :blobpats:

A screenshot of the nm-connection-editor GUI for NetworkManager-SSH, where an IPv6 address has been input into the "Gateway" field. With version 1.4.1 of the plugin, it will not work.
