The Danish government is using the upcoming Christmas break to slip through a public consultation for a draft law that would make it an OFFENCE to use a to access content that would otherwise not be available in Denmark, or to circumvent the blocking of "illegal" websites. hoeringsportalen.dk/Hearing/De

This is done under the guise of ensuring a technologically neutral implementation of Directive 98/84 on pay-TV decoders (hint: the IP address is NOT a conditional access device).

English translation of the highlighted part:

The term ‘other technical solution’ should be understood broadly. The broad wording is intended to ensure that the proposed amendment covers any technical solution used to provide unauthorised access to media content.

For example, it will also be prohibited to use VPN connections to access media content that would otherwise not be available in Denmark, or to circumvent the blocking of illegal websites.

Sometimes surprises come when you least expect them. A few months ago, I helped an acquaintance install a router at his house. He is very happy with it; it does excellent load balancing and failover over 4G.
A little while ago, he sent me a message about how "Back to Home" helped him bypass the limited connection at the hotel he is currently in.

I hadn't tried it yet, so I did a couple of tests.

It's really practical and quick to set up. Well done, MikroTik! @mikrotik

Here's a totally off-the-cuff pitch for the web: I just want to be able to load a webpage from a swarm by leeching, and then click an "I approve" button if it looks non-sketchy and I want to seed the page. I want to bookmark magnet links to make human-readable URLs and allow collisions between actual names/content to be decided socially (e.g. click to accept a new version of this page from this new swarm). I don't want a bunch of new protocols. No for domain names or donations. No vibe-coded corporate-sponsored AI BS. No repos. Just give me the wild west with everything visible and no default seeding so that bad actors don't bother with it so much. Run it through a or something if you want privacy.

Hi @hackaday

VPN aren't meant to make us anonymous, there's TOR for this.

are primarily designed to bypass geo-restrictions in hostile environments (looking at you ) and hide your traffic from snooping ISPs and third-party websites.

See the excellent write up by @privacyguides here:

Is Ofcom coming for VPNs?

Monitoring their use through the narrow lens of whether the UK Online Safety Act is working is shortsighted.

"It’s important to note VPNs can help protect children's security online too, they aren’t just used to avoid content blocks."

The new VPN from Tor is pretty interesting.

Still in beta so it may not actually be production ready yet, but its got some very exciting features.

Each app gets its own separate tor circuit, or can be excluded from the VPN.

UPDATE: I’m retracting this link/post, because some folks smarter than me pointed out some things about the source that make me uncomfortable.

I didn’t want to dirty delete, so I’m adding this note.

As a replacement, here’s a great and trustworthy VPN list from the extra smart folks at @privacyguides:

There's a petition...

Tell legislators to stop their attacks on VPNs.

There are a multitude of reasons for using a VPN, from concern about a site's known data selling and tracking habits, to not wanting someone knowing where you're at.

Legislators hate them, along with encryption, because they disrupt the state's ability to prosecute both its laws and its more nefarious desires.

So, anyway, I signed.

Thanks to @s3phy again for helping me understand another area where IPv6 is broken in Linux desktop networking configuration tools: connecting to a SSH server to create a SOCKS proxy using the NetworkManager SSH plugin. That thing only checks if the gateway address is a valid IPv4 address :blobpats:

I reported the issue here: github.com/danfruehauf/Network

A screenshot of the nm-connection-editor GUI for NetworkManager-SSH, where an IPv6 address has been input into the "Gateway" field. With version 1.4.1 of the plugin, it will not work.

Blink and you’ll have never seen it in the first place 🫥

Age verification rules in the UK Online Safety Act are snapping parts of the Internet out of existence.

But it’s not what you think (porn)!

News on conflicts: GONE. Support for sexual health and smoking: GONE.

Watch as ORG’s @JamesBaker shows how censorship works ⬇️

Age verification laws are a trojan horse, endgame is destroying anonymity.

The path seems clear: normalize checks -> ban circumvention tools (VPNs) -> roll out state-controlled digital IDs -> build a permanent record of your digital life for corporations and "pre-crime" analytics.

You are trading a free, open internet for digital chains. If there ever was a moment to defend decentralized and anonymous systems, it is this.

I'm working on a new blog post about my deployment of and in my for early 2025. I will discuss the differences between a server and Tailscale, Headscale, Docker Compose configuration, , access control through ACL configuration, integration with Nginx Proxy Manager, and more. Please note that I will not cover OIDC authentication yet.

Let me know if you have any specific questions or other topics you would like me to address.
