What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

If you're building a JavaScript library and need logging, you would love LogTape hackers.pub/@hongminhee/2025/l

It's great folks are talking about internet resiliency, but resist the temptation to go build the cool fun mesh network first and then the services that run on it second. You need the services first. You're far more likely to see your country or area getting islanded than you are to see your ISP suddenly switched off, and you're better placed to rebuild IP networks from a single access point where you can access a wiki and send local email than you are building services on your empty mesh

More adventures in 3d printing bike packing stuff. Designed a fork cage, since the others either printed in bad orientation (layer weakness) or required a lot of supports. This prints flat on bed with sides at 40ยฐ, no need for support. The โ€œsticky-out" part on back is printed separately. I found small roll of TPU and printed out someone's flexible strap model.

A 3d printed bike front fork cage partially mounted (missing a screw) and showing a TPU strap wound through the holesBack side of the cage showing the part that goes against fork nestled into notch. The part has 3 holes for mounting and two indents where a strap can go through. The TPU strap (black) holding the stuff sack I sewed, thereโ€™s a PETG (red) clasp for securing the strap

I had the beginning of an idea for a talk last night. I've not gotten much beyond the title (in the image) and the general concept of "companies are using your code whether you want them to or not. here's how to navigate the reality of being in MegaCorp's supply chain" not to make developers embrace the idea, but to help ease the pains that come with it. Anyway, if this sounds mildly interesting to you, let me know.

Two panel meme. In the top panel, a dimly-lit pirate looks into the camera saying "you'd better start believing in supply chains". In the bottom panel, the pirate is a decaying corpse saying "you're in one."

(This is a scene from "The Pirates of the Caribbean")

Me: updates web site to show off books in a more modern and legible way. Social media's been around fifteen years or so, I guess I better interoperate it

then discovers @b0rkJulia Evans's site has *animated* covers on her books. :flan_piteous:

Oh, well... I only have, what? another ten years or so of this career, if I'm lucky? it'll be fine.

Hey, look at that, a new standardised endpoint dropping in Mastodon 4.4 for OAuth Userinfo: docs.joinmastodon.org/methods/

Use it in combination with the profile scope added in Mastodon 4.3 to get back basic profile information when doing a "sign in with Mastodon" functionality.

It's discoverable via the OAuth Server Metadata endpoint (literally the section below the linked on above)

one of my goals with "The Secret Rules of the Terminal" is to show you that you have a lot of choices about how your shell behaves, that a well-configured shell can make your life in the terminal a LOT easier, and that (if you're using bash or zsh) there's a strong chance that some of the defaults are not serving you well social.jvns.ca/@b0rk/114739372
