What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Using a 485M year graph to show that "we're in a cooling period" is objectively the dumbest winger climate change denial shit I've ever heard...

Newsflash my dude, human society such as we understand it is probably 20K or less years old. So it really doesn't matter how hot the earth was when "life" consisted of dinosaurs and plankton you fucking dipshit. This thing, we call "human society?" Doesn't work at the rate of warming we're currently on.

Okay, #Fediverse, here’s my long-winded reply to @tchambersTim Chambers about “The Seven Deadly Fediverse UX Sins”. I mainly wrote this because it’s a really interesting subject, and I believe there’s a lot of positive things we could do together.

This 10-year AI regulation moratorium that Republican Senators are pushing as part of their “One Big, Beautiful Bill” budget package would not only block new state + local rules protecting us from AI discrimination in housing, employment, and healthcare but this could also erase years of hard work passing bans on privacy-invading AI tech like facial recognition. The same tech being actively used by police, ICE + military to target vulnerable people, especially black and brown communities.

ensure that the User can trust the Wallet Solution

they buy the bs sold by google/apple huh

play integrity / safety net (aka drm) does not ensure the user of anything, all it does it take away the user’s ability to modify the software the devices they own run

This allows the operating system of the device to perform relevant checks regarding the authenticity of the app

no, it gives the app ways to check if the OS is unmodified, by google’s definition of unmodified.

the app shouldn’t check the os, the os should be safe by default and vet apps. should an user want to do a modification to their os that google did not personally approve, that should be none of the concerns of applications running under that os

I just had to call my power company because reasons, and in the little automated hold thing, there was an announcement that said:

"We look forward to helping you though mutually respectful conversation (Emphasis added by me because the recording emphasized those words). Be aware that we will not tolerate any abusive language to our staff, and will disconnect the call in that event."

And like

YESSSSSSSSSSS

Holy shit why don't more call centers protect their people like this? I have too many friends working in call centers that deserve this sort of protection.

Just finished an incredible conversation with @andypiper.

I am so glad the Fediverse has people like Andy working for it, and it has been really wonderful to discuss about many many different topic but that can be boiled down to:

let’s defeat billionaries’ oppression thanks to the power of communities!

A huge public thank you for your work, Andy, and to the whole team at @Mastodon for making the Internet a better place (but in particular to @ClearlyClaire for maintaining Mastodon Glitch which is the most beautiful soft-fork ever made)
