A friend just sent me this link and oh it's such good advice:

In short: The failure mode of clever is “asshole.”

Meaning, if you're trying to be witty or clever without context (like, the first DM) with someone who doesn't already know you very well, well, don't.

It'll likely get taken the wrong way, and that's a far worse outcome than your first interaction being polite and to the point - the wit can shine later :)

(I have definitely fallen foul of this many times!)

While it was so hot in Berlin this week I needed some shorts so I cut the legs off my least favourite pair of black jeans. I tried to wear them out and remembered that the reason I never wore this pair was that they had those stupid pockets made for people who only want to carry around toothpicks and pocket change, aka they had like 1 inch deep pockets. I didn't want to sacrifice another pair to short-ification so I sewed a deeep pocket into the inside and it worked so well!

lots of people think the number 1 problem for indies is game quality, when actually it's visibility by multiple orders of magnitude. how can i prove this? because even now, almost a year out from Kitsune Tails' launch, we still haven't reached all the lesbian fox girls who'd buy the game if they knew of it

how do i know this? because during each sale promotion i get at minimum one reply, often more, from these lesbian fox girls who only just then discovered the game through one of my posts

Heh, got pitched based on my Quamina open-source GitHub repo on behalf of “Fabinvest” which turns out to be a PE fund owned by Qatari royal Jassim Al-Thani. A polite and restrained pitch, not pushy or scammy.

There’s too much money in the world and its owners are increasingly desperate in their search for a place to invest it. I suppose prospecting popular GitHub repos is less crazy than other things that I see going on.

Well, I had a lovely day at today. I talked to lots of makers, friends both new and old. My voice was starting to give out after lunch. Brian Corteil's Giant Unicorn HAT is awesome. Davros was his usual menacing self. Dr Chris Parrott's WAVE (Webb inspired Actuated Visual Effects) was glorious!

Are you still on ?

Spotify’s CEO Daniel Ek has raised €600M for his new startup, which is developing AI TECH FOR WAR. Ek still owns 9% of Spotify, but has 37% voting control. His net worth went from $2.5B to $10B in the last two years alone, on the back of paying musicians a pittance in royalties.

And don’t forget:

• Spotify spent $250M of your subscription dollars to invite Joe Rogan to spew his disinformation on their platform.
• They’re still trying to embrace and extinguish Podcasts.
• They’re developing in-house, AI-generated “music” so users will play them (royalty-free) instead of music created by humans (who demand royalty).

And now, he’s using his wealth, created by your subscriptions, to fund tech that will use AI to literally murder humans in war.

Stop funding him. Quit Spotify now.

“Spotify’s CEO invests $1 billion into an AI military start-up — and musicians are fuming”

So the basic USB PD sequence is

  1. Source: Source_Capabilities { 5V3A, other possible capabilities}
  2. Sink: Request { 5V1.5A }
  3. Source: Accept
  4. Source: PS_Rdy

I spent the entire day trying to work out why the source (my laptop) didn’t like my Accept message. It was bitwise identical to what I saw other hardware sending, so I didn’t understand why it disliked it. I added all sorts of debug logging to track it down.

The problem turned out to be that my stack was too slow, on account of all of the debug logging. A good old embedded systems classic.

Countries aren’t consumer goods you pick and choose, in spite of what digital nomads and passport bros say. For the same reason that retired people in Singapore who could live a more luxurious life in culturally similar Malaysia, Thailand or Taiwan eventually go home, not to mention places that aren’t similar, it’s not reasonable to assume that everyone can or should move halfway across the world. Even if they figure out visa restrictions eventually, I think this conversation lacks nuance and understanding for things like language, social isolation, access to friends, family, support structures that you simply cannot put a dollar figure on.

Even if you’re the sort of person who doesn’t think they have any of that, just ‘knowing how things work’ and ‘being a default person where you are’ is a sort of privilege you’ll likely never get back, as an immigrant from anywhere to anywhere (maybe unless you went as a child).

Cat health, aid request

For the past couple days Jack has been unable to keep any food, and at time water down, this morning we had to rush her into the vet and then transfer to an emergency vet, so far the bills for her care and tests (bloods, ultrasound and x-ray with sedation, anti-nausea meds, etc) has cost over £1000.
If anyone can spare any money to help cover these bills I would be so grateful!
