What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

What does it really take to fund and execute a successful security audit in open source?

In this newly released talk from the Open Source Summit North America, FreeBSD Foundation Executive Director Deb Goodkin and Alpha-Omega’s Michael Winser walk through the full lifecycle of FreeBSD’s third-party audit—from funding and planning to outcomes and lessons learned.

Okay people. I know the government is burning down, and the internet is burning down, and everything is burning down, but I'm going to play College Football 26 and that's just the way it is.

A video of a sound engineer and a Disney nerd walking through Disneyland was fascinating. I thought I already knew a shit ton about Disneyland but I had no idea there were so many hidden speakers around the park, hiding in plain sight in fake windows and trees! youtube.com/watch?v=qhtpMwjvWSI

I think the @BoxyBSD project is one of the best ideas for the community. Providing real and completely free instances () with is really great for testing and learning.

I really love this project and if you are into or any other this might be interesting for you. Just as it is also a alternative to bigger hostels like or . I really love the philosophy and idea behind it

ok I think it's time for someone to make a mobile app equivalent of deer.social not necessarily on the app store, but published through something like @altstore.io and whatever the android open source app store is... disabling DMs for ppl that don't wanna verify their identity (or are under 18!)

RE: https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:4hawmtgzjx3vclfyphbhfn7v/post/3ltmznlyeg22v

The image shows text explaining that Epic Games' Kids Web Services (KWS) will be used to give UK users choices about how to verify their age. The text states, "For people who are under 18 or don't want to go through this process, we'll make adult-appropriate content inaccessible, and we'll disable features like direct messaging." Below the text are three screenshots of a phone displaying the Bluesky app. The first screenshot shows the settings screen with the text "Age Assurance. You're using Bluesky from a location that legally requires you to verify your age prior to accessing certain content and features." A "Verify now" button is visible. The second screenshot shows the age verification screen with the text "Verify your age. We use KWS to verify that you're an adult. When you click 'Begin' below, Bluesky will securely store and share your email address with KWS." An email field is shown with the text "myaccount@gmail.com". The third screenshot shows the chats screen with the text "Age Assurance. You're using Bluesky from a location that legally requires you to verify your age prior to accessing certain content and features. You must complete age verification to access this screen." A "Verify now" button is visible. The text below the screenshots states, "Users in the UK will see notices of age requirements, and instructions for completing age verification."

⚠️ Later today I will migrate the mstdn.social server to its own, new dedicated server with plenty of room to grow!

The server will be offline for some time so please be patient in the meanwhile while I set everything up.

The goal is to launch with the latest version of Mastodon with a ton of improvements

I will post an exact time later!♥️😸

You’re the best!

When the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy movie came out, I grabbed a towel and went to see it, but the showing was about an hour and a half after I bought the ticket.

So I went to a coffee shop near the movie theater where I ran into a beautiful girl who was waiting for the same showing, and she had also brought her towel.

So we decided to go see the movie together.

It turns out she hated the film, and I loved it, and we never saw each other again. (ste)

Mastodon 4.4, now available, has a small setting that’s a big deal. See Administration/Server Settings/Discovery, “Allow external sites to see your Mastodon server as a traffic source”.

It means that every time you post a link to a site, that site is going to see as many hits as the number of instances that you have followers on, and those hits are going to be labeled as coming from Mastodon.

This is going to seriously increase Fediverse visibility. Get your instance admin to turn it on!

Another #Anubis instance has risen from the ether, to be the judge of what service accesses our forgejo. Super simple to setup on #NixOS thanks to the existing configuration module.

During the upgrade session yesterday, I somehow realized my forgejo was busy doing other stuff than keeping some mirrors up to date. Now, Anubis is busy. Thanks @cadeyXe :verified:

Measuring the Impact of Early-2025 AI on Experienced Open-Source Developer Productivity

"When developers are allowed to use AI tools, they take 19% longer to complete issues—a significant slowdown that goes against developer beliefs and expert forecasts. This gap between perception and reality is striking: developers expected AI to speed them up by 24%, and even after experiencing the slowdown, they still believed AI had sped them up by 20%."

Like so many papers on AI, this ignores the ethical aspects and any power analysis -- which would be just as problematic if AI tools actually made experienced developers faster. So it's the gap between perception and reality that I find most interesting. Keep that in mind when you see developers -- or anybody else -- talking about how amazingly more productive they are thanks to AI!

Fragmentation on the Fediverse is a real problem.

Hypothetically, let’s say I’m an admin. I don’t like "John Doe" (just a random example). Instead of simply blocking John Doe myself, I demand that "Billy Bob" — the admin of his instance — remove him entirely.

Billy Bob refuses, because John Doe hasn’t broken any rules. So, being an egotistical maniac, I blacklist Billy Bob’s entire instance — 5,000+ innocent users who had nothing to do with anything.

I also have 5,000+ users on my instance. Now you’ve got over 10,000 people who can’t communicate, all because of a personal disagreement.

This kind of thing happens far too often on the Fediverse. If you create more than one account (on different instances), you’ll likely discover people you didn’t even know existed — people you’d want to follow but previously couldn’t, due to the growing fragmentation across the network.

The scale of the problem becomes even more obvious when you move to a different instance. You’ll likely find that not everyone you currently follow can be followed from the new site.

The solution?

Right now, it means having more than one account just to keep in touch with everyone you want to follow.

How crazy is that?

anti-trans ideology

Sometimes so-called gender-critical "feminists" make statements that sound completely logical and relatable to many, especially cisgender people. These statements are more dangerous than the other ones that are obviously aggressive and against fundamental human rights.

The U.S. Department of Energy has a nuclear microreactor, and they’re looking for suggestions of experiments to conduct with it. They’re looking for projects in electricity generation, industrial process heat for chemical plants, and advanced controls and safeguard systems for reactor designs.
