Bluesky’s user base is roughly 40% female and 60% male. While we don’t collect gender data directly, we manually sampled ~1,500 users to get a representative estimate and a separate analysis by Hootsuite came to a similar demographic split.

Sitting on the sofa at home with some cold-like illness I'm fascinated by the moiré patterns through the insect screen on the windows.

About 7-8m away is some wood. About 3-4m away is a screen. The wood grain is too fine to perceive. The mesh in the screen is also too fine to perceive. But through the magic of aliasing I can see a low frequency version of the wood grain through the screen.

It's a form of heterodyning that makes a high frequency signal (wood grain) perceptible by multiplying by a local oscillator (screen) and filtering (my eyesight).

I scraped the schedule for Open Sauce 2025 this morning and built an alternative schedule interface with the option to add everything to your calendar (via ICS)... working entirely on my iPhone, using OpenAI Codex and Claude Artifacts

I guess you could call this "vibe scraping"? OpenAI Codex turns out to be great at writing custom scrapers if you give it internet access and tell it to download and install Playwright

Prompts + transcripts: simonwillison.net/2025/Jul/17/

Screenshot of a blue page, Open Sauce 2025, July 18-20 2025, Download Calendar ICS button, then Friday 18th and Saturday 18th and Sunday 20th pill buttons, Friday is selected, the Welcome to Open Sauce with William Osman event on the Industry Stage is visible.

What I'm listening to today: "Level 3", Jim Andron

The Phillips CD-I is one of the most infamous video game system failures ever, and it hides a secret: *The CD-I Tetris game had a bizarrely kind of amazing soundtrack.* 10 tracks (I also love "level 0") of the kind of pure vibes "Vaporwave" was trying to chase in the 2010s slowing down 80s r&b. This version comes pre-slowed down! Strange murky easy-listening swamp jazz, general MIDI instruments only

@karotteLukas's field guide to embedded CPU cores:

- does it have a USB connection? 8051
- does it handle USB power delivery? Cortex-M0
- does it process IP packets? MIPS
- is it in some sort of video ASIC? 80186

Yeah, seriously, what's up with the 80186? So far, I've encountered them in
- DP to HDMI converters (MCDP2900A)
- DVD Player SoCs (ZR36966)
- Monitor SoCs (STDP9310)

Got my pippyg mic working with my iphone. Well, no bats yet, but there will be. It arrived almost instantly from here: wildlifeservices.uk/product-pa You have to have the right connector (which I happened to have), but it looks like for some mysterious vaping reason, there are loads for sale cheap - ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=lig The bat app is apps.apple.com/gb/app/bat-dete

@jackwilliambell the way I minimize this risk is by asking where nation states might poison the software pipeline, what artifacts would result if they did, and how likely it is those artifacts would be noticed. A web browser is a high value target but the oversight on a small, minority browser will be less than builds from the Debian or Mozilla motherships.

slight tangent from my ramblings in the other thread about depression and motivation to not let everything fall apart, you gotta feel it out on a case by case basis, but I've found the best way to help a person with anxiety is to be socially present but not do stuff for them, while the best way to help someone with depression is to give them space but do as much of the work for them as you can - ie, don't just say "your favorite band is in town" link the site selling tickets in your DM
