What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

An incomplete list of people excluded from 'international' conferences that are in-person only and aren't streamed or recorded
- People with caring responsibilities
- People with disabilities
- People with health vulnerabilities
- People who don't fly in recognition of climate emergencies
- People who work for orgs with ethical no-fly policies
- People who have their travel disrupted due to climate chaos
- People who only engage with fully open access scholarship (if you have to travel+pay to watch a talk, it's not at all open access, even if a related publication is)
- People who can't leave their country for fear of not being let back in
- People who can't get visas
- Unfunded/underfunded people
- People with unfavourable exchange rates
- People who have limited holidays off work
- People who can't afford it
- etc..

I guess you end up with rooms mostly of academics with travel budgets who are too senior to really do research any more, and research students with stipends. That's fine but the perspectives can feel limited, ungrounded and underinformed.. with a huge environmental cost.

As we're getting more into hikes around our new home โ€“ and I record tracks of them to also improve โ€“ I've made a profile at @gedankenstuecke@trails.tchncs.de to share some nice trails.

It's an open source trail/track sharing platform that's federated thanks to , so if you can read this post, you can follow my profile there too!*

* that is except you read this through the bridge to BlueSky, then you're out of luck and should give the actual Fediverse another try ๐Ÿ˜‰

I received an email. I'm not sure if it was generated by an AI, but they knew several details about me and my company - details not easily found online, so the source was likely elsewhere.
I started reading to understand their objective, which eventually became clear. They want to help me "digitize" and "modernize" my company, because Cloud and AI are a great aid for businesses, and they are experts in these technologies. According to them, "companies like mine should innovate by using these technologies and not remain relegated to old 'pen and paper' procedures, otherwise becoming less credible".

In other words, the email was a short circuit, completely dissonant between the first and second parts. Either they did a classic copy-paste for the second part, or they used a poor-quality AI. Or both.

I replied, offering my consulting services on how not to use AI and IT tools. I told them that my consulting would be a great aid to companies like theirs, who use "modern" tools so poorly that they become uncredible, and I'm convinced their systems are leaking everywhere.

I'll be curious to see their response ๐Ÿ˜†

My primary concern relates to broad technology adoption. Despite having made a lot of progress on further fleshing out a range of linked data standards, there are still huge challenges to overcome for the LD ecosystem to see their technologies have widespread uptake.

Linked data has its niche areas and audiences where it sees more popular use, but for average devs to "bridge the gap" and go all-in on LD (as all standards are intertwined) poses a giant leap to take.

Democracies should stop focusing on efficiency: Lack thereof and friction are important parts of what defines a healthy democracy. Efficiency will always sacrifice participation, representation and meaningful political discourse. The focus on it is a path into authoritarianism. In the essay ...

Weโ€™ve been thinking โ€” what if there was a structured course to help more people learn how to use and contribute to FreeBSD?

Whether youโ€™re just getting started or looking to sharpen your sysadmin skills, weโ€™d love your input:

Would a FreeBSD course be useful to you or your team?

Your feedback could help shape future resources for the community.

In June we announced our 2025-2028 strategic objectives initiatives. The second objective is "Enhance our impact" to direct our standards work through a framework that enables us to qualitatively and quantitatively define, analyze, and communicate the impact W3C intends to have.

We want our trusted gathering place to welcome more far-seeing technical experts and advocates about, and for, the web, so our standards work must consider the impact it has on the world.
