A huge missed opportunity of the Carney government is its failure to capitalize on the brain drain happening in the US. Canada is perfectly placed to welcome those scientists and academics. I'd bulk up the NRC and hire as many as possible as quickly as possible, then figure out what to do with them later. It could have a generational impact like project paperclip's, priceless.

New blog post, in which I explore the cost/benefit ratio and return-on-investment implications of all the futzing around you have to do with LLMs in order to get them to do any work.
I think "programming in elementary/middle/high school" misses the mark by teaching from the perspective of "these kids will be future programmers who are employed in the tech industry" and not "this is a valuable life skill".
I think powershell & bash scripting as well as use of a command line would be very good for any person touching a computer to be able to fudge together.
The dumbest part of this is that if it works, if an LLM really is the ur-machine from which all other machines may be trivially derived with almost no work, then all the “AI startup” people are totally screwed too. It’s a race to the bottom that starts *at* the bottom.
Just logically, the only possible winners in a world where everything is a trivial wrapper around ChatGPT or Claude are OpenAI and Anthropic. If you’re starting an “AI startup” rather than working for one of them, you’re the dumb money!

Finally started playing Coffee Talk for the first time last night. And I really like it! I'm only on Day 8 so far and really love it. I cannot stress this enough
HOWEVER
However.
The heavy focus on fantasy races/racism and its obvious (and imo sometimes heavy-handed) parallels to real-life racism can get uhhhh uncomfortable sometimes. Like. "Orcs being the stand-in for low-paid POC holding up strike demo placards reading 'We still have brain! [sic]'"
