It's alive! The is a nice piece of hardware but it was missing my favorite operating system . Since I am using a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5 as core, it was not trivial to get NixOS running on it.
After several days of tinkering and learning a lot about the boot process of ARM-based devices, the structure of the Linux kernel source tree and the Nix language in general, the system finally boots up as expected. Yay!

Clockwork uConsole with the output of fastfetch showing it runs NixOS 25.05

We are once again seeking self-nominations for speakers for the Languages, Systems, and Data Seminar!

👉 forms.gle/H2TUv9cUPh29WeL79

The Languages, Systems, and Data Seminar (fondly known as the LSD Seminar) meets weekly on Zoom to discuss interesting topics in the areas of programming languages, systems, databases, and more. We aim for mainly grad student speakers, with occasional exceptions. If you know someone who would be a good speaker, please share this link with them!

LSD Seminar Speaker Self-Nomination

Are you interested in giving a talk at the UC Santa Cruz Languages, Systems, and Data Seminar (https://lsd.ucsc.edu/lsd-seminar/)? If so, suggest your name here! The Languages, Systems, and Data Seminar meets weekly to discuss interesting topics in the areas of programming languages, systems, databases, formal methods, security, software engineering, verification, architecture, and beyond. Our goal is to encourage interactions and discussions between students (grad and undergrad), researchers, faculty, and the broader community with interests in these areas. We generally meet on Fridays at noon (PT) during the academic year. Our meetings are hybrid: attendees can join either on Zoom, or for those on the UCSC campus, in person in the LSD Lab (Engineering 2, Room 398). A talk is usually around 50 minutes long, followed by Q&A. Most speakers give their talks remotely via Zoom, but speakers who are physically nearby are encouraged to visit in person. Many of our speakers are graduate students working in one or more of the research areas listed above, but we aren't limited to grad students. Feel free to browse our talk archives (https://lsd.ucsc.edu/lsd-seminar/) to get an idea of the mix of speakers we've hosted in the past. We especially encourage talks from early-stage grad students. Filling out this form won't guarantee a response from us, but it will let us know that you'd like to be considered when we have available talk slots. **We are currently looking for speakers for October 2025 or later.** Thanks in advance!

Ok, so there’s like a stock trope that an abandoned building will have bird shit in it. This has been on my mind because weather has been lovely this week and I’ve left my patio doors open for the past, like, five days.

Every once in a while I have a little spike of anxiety that maybe I shouldn’t do that because a bird will wander in and, you know, shit. How does a bird distinguish between “this place is abandoned, I can shit in here” and “this place is inhabited, the owner is just downstairs all the time”? That’s asking for a lot of thought on the part of birds, of literal bird brains.

디지털 인플레이션, 끝없이 올라가는 기기 가격의 부담

푸른곰 @purengom@purengom.com

@jremsikjrJim Remsik has lived on the bleeding edge (but also the heart's center) of the Ruby world for decades. This fall, he's organizing six (yes, SIX) XO Ruby confs all around the United States.

On this episode, Jim joins us to reminisce about the early days of Ruby and Rails, share what he's learned from so many years of organizing events, and invite all of us to join him on his upcoming 7500 mile road trip.

New Privacy Guides article 🔒 🚩
by me:

They all claim:
"Your privacy is important to us."
But how can we know if that's true?

With all the privacy washing and disinformation around, it becomes increasingly difficult to evaluate who we can trust with our data.

There are red flags, and green(ish) flags, we can look for to help us assess who to trust, or not 🚩
