『Little Problems』는 『The Case of The Golden Idol』의 영향을 받은 빈칸 채우기 추리 게임입니다. 다만, 『Unpacking』과 같은 Cozy한 분위기와 이야기를 채택했지요. 기존 빈칸 채우기 장르 게임들이 『오브라 딘 호의 귀환』이나 『The Roottrees are Dead』처럼 사람이 죽거나, 최소한 세상의 어두운 측면을 다루는 경향이 있는데(추리라는 장르를 가능하게 만드는 사건이라는 게 보통 그런 편이지요), 그런 면에서는 미스터리 소설이라는 장르에서의 요네자와 호노부 작품이 서 있는 위치 같은 느낌입니다.

제가 이 장르 게임을 많이 하는 것을 아는 지인이 알려줘서 플레이하게 되었는데, 처음 플레이했을 때에는 흡입력이 약하다고 느꼈습니다. 분위기는 괜찮지만 이 다음을 보고 싶은 느낌은 약했다는 거죠. 『Unpacking』에는 성장이라는 이야기가 있었고, 장르의 다른 게임에는 기괴한 살인과 인간의 악행이라는 훅이 있었습니다. 이 게임은 대학에 입학하자마자 중요한 날에 늦잠을 자서 조별과제를 망쳐버리는 이야기로 시작하는데, 여기서 기대되는 이야기의 진폭이 그렇게 높지는 않으니까요.

그런데 조금 진행하다보니, 의외로 게임플레이가 이 장르에서 할 수 있는 다양한 게임플레이를 골고루 보여줘서 게임플레이를 기대하며 네 시간 정도 되는 플레이타임을 마지막까지 끌고 갈 수 있었습니다. 가계도 채우기, 월리를 찾아라, 머더 미스터리, 기호화된 언어 해석하기…. 그 과정에서 이야기는 복잡한 상황 속에서 청춘을 즐기려는 여러 인물들이 분투하는 내용을 무겁지 않게 묘사합니다. 그 모든 장면들 중에서, 조별과제 보고서의 영어 문장을 이게 맞나? 이거 아닌데… 하며 고치는 장면은 제 가슴을 깊이 울렸습니다.

한 가지 메타게임적인 측면은 이 게임이 사용한 언어인데, 이 게임은 영어와 중국어 간체 두 언어를 지원하는 게임입니다. 영어 버전으로 플레이했을 때 문장 끝에 유난히 물결표가 많은 특징 등으로 보아 중국어 화자가 원 스크립트를 작성한 게임으로 멋대로 추측하고 있지요. 스크립트는 제가 봤을 때에는 꽤 깔끔하고, 단어를 집어넣어야 하는 게임이고 스크립트를 통해 추적해야 하는 게임이니만큼 고유명사도 사용 언어(영어)를 기준으로 정렬되어 있어 사람의 이름을 제외하고는(어느 정도 등장 인물의 폭이 글로벌합니다. Hwang, Jung, Hassan, Nguyen 등) 영어로 통일되어 있습니다. 딱 한 군데, 문어 그림의 온라인 프로필과 결부된 이메일 주소가 octo.muneo@email.com 으로 등장하는데 이건 왜인지 모르겠습니다. 한국어 사용자가 아니면 이걸 단서로 오인할 수 있을 것 같은데, 어쩌다 한국어에서 문어 두 글자가 게임에 끼어들게 되었는지 궁금합니다.(그리고 그 프로필을 쓰는 사람의 성이 Jung이었는데, 이 이메일 주소를 보는 순간 저게 융씨는 아니겠구나 하는 생각을 했습니다.) 제가 눈치채지 못하고 다른 데에도 비슷한 게 있을 수는 있지만… 아니 진쩌 어쩌다가?

비싸지 않고 확실히 다른 느낌이 있는 게임이라 이 장르를 좋아하시는 분들께 추천할 만 하고, 이 장르 게임 치고는 힌트가 꽤 많이 알려주는 편이라 분위기가 마음에 드는 분들께도 추천드릴 수 있을 것 같습니다.

America's fundamental problem is that it has never meaningfully punished rebellion, insurrection, or even outright treason.

Pardons were issued for the Whiskey Rebellion, the Civil War, and January 6. Nixon committed treason to get elected, Reagan worked to keep American hostages held for political gain to get elected.

Until and unless the United States decides to punish those that actively undermine the country itself, we are destined to fail; it is inevitable that more attempts will succeed.

Where is this on Mastodon?

I've been taking Ozempic for the last couple of years with dramatic effects.

But now for the last year my weight is stable at a reasonably healthy level for the first time in a long time. Getting prepared for the big decade, I just turned 70 this year. It's a daunting moment. I remember when my grandfather was 70. It seemed like an impossibly age. I was 15.

Anyway I haven't said anything about it on my main blog. Not sure how people would react.

But this blog, daveverse, is finding another audience. I haven't made sense of it, people are liking it somewhere, but we don't have a Like button on the site. I'm thinking they must be doing it on Mastodon, but where? This is something we have to work on for Mastodon. There need to be places, and I always assumed they were there but now I think they aren't. This is not a good thing to be confused about.

Anyway back to Ozempic. I realize now how it works. After two years, I don't get an emotional rush out of eating. It isn't about satisfying a need for love any more. It's just eating. And I swear I taste so much more of the food now than I ever did. Eating for nutrition and eating for sensation.

My old grandfather used to call this the Art of Living. Maybe this attitude toward food isn't only coming from the drug, maybe time does that too.

My message btw to people who feel 70 is impossibly old, you won't feel that way so much when you are 70 because you keep learning and seeing things you didn't see before. It's part of the trip. I almost died a few times earlier in life, glad I didn't so I get to do this.
