@jasonJason Petersen (he) @0xabad1deaabadidea another cursed fact about the reserved filenames: COMยน, COMยฒ, COMยณ, LPTยน, LPTยฒ, and LPTยณ are reserved. but not COM or LPTโด through โน, because only "the 8-bit ISO/IEC 8859-1 superscript digits" are considered equivalent to ASCII digits for file name purposes.

My town has an overpass that goes over an interstate highway. Today me and about ten other people (including one of my state reps) stood out there with our NO KINGS banners (both directions) and waved and some of us had flags. Judging by the honking vs giving us the finger ratio, this small act of resistance was very much appreciated. We'll be out there every Sunday. Do what you can.

Yesterday, Elon Musk told a large crowd of fascists in London that...

โ€œviolence is going to come to you, you will have no choice. Youโ€™re in a fundamental situation here. Whether you choose violence or not, violence is coming to you. You either fight back or you die, thatโ€™s the truth, I think.โ€

If you still think it's OK to use X or anything else connected to Musk, I simply have no capacity left to understand you.

Regarding:

"So I commit an .md or .htm file ..."

Retejo supports .md and .htm, but also supports all the other file-extension listed here:

codeberg.org/reiver/go-ext2med

Regarding:

"... and that results in an AP post"

That results in Retejo returning content for whatever path you created that file at.

And, that path becomes a first-class object on the Fediverse and Social-Web.

But, at least currently, Retejo does NOT post an activity about it to anyone else's ActivityPub inbox.

Interesting article from The Register on Friday about alternative kernels. As per the article, the topic of other kernels surface again after developers continue to clash over certain tech like Rust, SystemD, and bcachefs.

The three kernels discussed are Managarm, Asterinas, and Xous. Until stumbling across this article today, I've not heard of any of them. I guess I have some reading ahead of me. The article also mentioned the idea of disgruntled devs possibly forking the Linux kernel - a fascinating and probably confusing experience for a lot of people.

Would certainly be an interesting thought experiment, now giving a valid reason to explicitly list the userland and kernel with which OS you happen to be using, ie Debian GNU/Fork-this, openSUSE GNU/Linux, Gentoo GNU/Asterinas, or whatever.

It also might just be easier and more straightfoward to use instead. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

If you are wondering what RDFa is โ€”

You might be more familiar with OpenGraph.

ogp.me/

OpenGraph is usually the thing that causes "preview cards" to be showed for links shared on social-media.

OpenGraph is written in RDFa. Which, in practice, is some special HTML elements added to the page.

For example:

<meta property="og:image" content="example.com/img/preview.png" />

So what about ActivityPubโ€ฝ โ€”

8/

REMEMBER: this is for power-users, not regular users

How would you get ActivityPub / ActivityStreams into HTML using RDFaโ€ฝ

Like this:

<div vocab="w3.org/ns/activitystreams#" typeof="Note">
<p property="name">Hello!</p>
<p>How do you do?</p>
</div>

AGAIN, REMEMBER: this is for power-users, not regular users.

Regular users can just write Markdown or HTML and Retejo will figure this out automatically for you

In another Chicago hellhole story, I played a big band gig at the Wicker Park farmer's market earlier today. There were a ton of dogs, twirling kids, and families enjoying large ice cream cones, cinnamon rolls, and other shit. Pretty ugly scene really.

Surveillance from the Fence

Yesterday morningโ€”Saturday, 13 September 2025โ€”I looked out into the backyard and noticed a dark shape perched on the back fence near the bird feeder. At first glance, I thought it was a squirrel, its tail hanging down in that familiar arc. But as my brain caught up with my eyes, I realized it was something else entirely.

I grabbed my camera and headed to the sunroom, hoping to get a few shots without disturbing the figure. Through the lens, the mystery resolved: a Cooperโ€™s hawk (Accipiter cooperii), just hanging out, back to me, head turned nearly 180 degrees, scanning the ground below like a surgeon preparing for the first incision.

I cracked the door open and took a few more pictures. Then I stepped out onto the patioโ€”and that was enough. The hawk lifted off and flew into the forest, landing in an oak tree just beyond the yard. It was still close enough for a few decent shots, but birds being birds, it tucked itself behind a veil of leaves, hidden but not gone.

Check out breathtaking photos of magnificent birds of prey, visit my photo gallery here:

swede1952-photographs.pixels.c

"A Cooperโ€™s hawk perches on a white backyard fence, its back to the camera, body taut and feathers layered like a well-kept archive. The plumage is grayish-brown, sleek and orderly, catching soft light that reveals subtle ripples and banding. But the drama lies in the headโ€”turned nearly 180 degrees, twisted with avian precision, as if the neck were a hinge of pure intent.

Its sharp beak points downward, and its blazing orange eye scans the ground below, hunting without motion. The gaze is surgical, focused, and unblinking. This is not a casual perchโ€”itโ€™s surveillance. The tail feathers fan slightly behind, balanced and banded, while the wings remain folded tight against the body, conserving energy for the moment of strike.

The background blurs into neutrality, placing all attention on the hawkโ€™s posture and purpose. The image is signed ยฉ Swede's Photographs in the bottom right cornerโ€”a quiet credit for capturing this moment of stillness, tension, and anatomical mastery.

This is a portrait of readiness. A sentinel with its back turned, but nothing missed." - Copilot with edits by the photographer

Voting for the PSF board elections is open for just a couple more days (see the official blog post at pyfound.blogspot.com/2025/09/t, and be sure to note the time zone and convert to your local time so that you don't miss it). If you are a voting member of the PSF, I'll ask the same thing I ask every year: please carefully read and consider each nomination statement, and vote for the candidates that you believe will best serve the PSF and the communities it supports.

@j12tJohannes Ernst

It doesn't have to be a blog.

It could be something more like a classic websites or wikis people users to have.

...

One use-case is that โ€”

I write something on a Retejo site.

If someone takes the URL to that, and, for example, puts it in the search-box of Mastodon โ€” it will show up as Fediverse content.

I.e., that article I wrote and published on my Retejo site is a first-class object on the Fediverse and social-web.

It can even be boosted, etc.

@kalebโ‚ Kaleb

A person creates the content of their web-site in either Markdown or HTML.

The Retejo server automatically deals with all the ActivityPub / ActivityStreams stuff for the person.

...

In ActivityPub there is a special way things ask for the ActivityPub version of a URL.

Retejo responds properly to this properly.

Retejo looks at the HTML and infers what data should go into the ActivityPub / ActivityStreams file and returns properly.
