I tend to think that Dunbar’s Number is somewhat arbitrary bullshit when used as “more than this, things break down” but as a rule for “smaller than this, emotions can be very human(e)”… it feels more useful. (Though also “very human” is not necessarily good; lots of gossip and grudges are bundled in there as well.)

An individual human without any of the support provided by larger organized groups is only able to exist at quite primitive levels, as any number of pieces of post-apocalyptic fiction can portray. Both small and large organized groups offer significant economies of scale and division of labor that provide most of the material conveniences that we take for granted in the modern world: abundant food, access to power, clean water, internet; cheap, safe and affordable long distance travel; and so forth. It is also only through such groups that one can meaningfully interact with (and even influence) the largest scale systems that humans are part of. But the benefits and dynamics of small and large groups are quite different. Small organized groups offer some economy of scale, but - being essentially below Dunbar's number https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunbar%27s_number in size - also fill social and emotional needs, and the average participant in such groups can feel connected to such groups and able to have real influence on their direction. Their dynamics can range anywhere from extremely healthy to extremely dysfunctional and toxic, or anything in between; but in the latter cases there is real possibility of individuals able to effect change in the organization (or at least to escape it and leave it to fail on its own). and of course the overall thrust of @taoTerence Tao’s thread is quite correct.

Part of the sadness a lot old-school foss people carry with them is that we liked these small, human(e) groups; and we have no idea how to recapture that very positive, human energy while simultaneously meeting the responsibilities of being a load-bearing part of the infrastructure of the entire world economy.

Another important tool we use in SQLiteData 1.0 is the battle-tested GRDB (by @groueGwendal Roué for querying and observing changes to the underlying SQLite database. Any app using GRDB can start syncing their database to CloudKit with just a few lines of code!

Why I think Zuckerberg is even worse than Musk: Yesterday I got a message on Threads that my account is locked and I had to appeal, which consisted of proving I'm me. I was never given the reason for locking my account. NPR and PBS have somehow managed to run a completely bollocks article linking the EU airport thing to AI - the article itself written by an AI cybersecurity vendor. wgcu.org/science-tech/2025-09-

It's completely false. The payloads used in this one are detected by free Defender AV with a decade old static AV detections. This is not some cyber mega attack by a ransomware group: it's extremely poor security hygiene.

This is a strange Sanyo XT clone board, a very weird formfactor, I could only get one screw in, the rest are standoffs.

I’ve been learning Persian (Farsi) for a while now, and I’m using a bunch of tools for it. The central one is certainly Anki, a spaced repetition app to train memory. I’m creating my own never-ending deck of cards, with different types of content, for different purposes. The most frequent type of cards is grammar focused phrases (very rarely single words) coming sometimes from my own daily life, but also very often directly from videos of the Persian Learning YouTube channel, created by Majid, a very talented and nice Persian teacher, in my opinion.
