A friend of mine is a professor who teaches CS and bioinformatics classes. She uploaded the wrong exam for her students, and a huge portion of them (like, 85% of the class) nailed material they had never seen before. Like, 100% quality work on Python or whatever (computers are just magic to me). And then one of the students asked what the deal was because they had never studied this stuff, and she got to learn that nearly all of her class was GPTing their way through it.

"The purpose of the First Amendment is to protect the right to publish what the government does not want published," Seth Stern said on KCRW.

The Pentagon's new policy is "antithetical to everything the First Amendment represents."

Most people's reactions to Metaballs on Apple Vision Pro has been, 'omg I want to try it.'

Some have asked, 'why metaballs?'.

Well, I think retro-technologies can be super fun when brought to modern platforms.

In the 90s, Metaballs were one of the first ways to create truly organic shapes. But, being able to interact with them in real-time, in Spatial – it's amazing!

I think apps should be fun, and fun leads to creativity.

ID cards are bad. Very bad.

1. Once they exist it will become necessary to always carry it. If you don't you must have something to hide, etc.
2. They can't stop people working in the 'black economy' because people currently employing those working for cash don't care.
3. It is another attack on trans and NB people (very unlikely someone would be allowed to have multiple IDs)
4. Massive data loss of personal information is highly likely.
5. Who pays? Why should they?
6. Police state becomes more likely with having your ID inspected whenever a copper wants to harass someone, especially POC.
7. OTHER OPTIONS ALREADY EXIST!

ID cards are a very bad, very dangerous, very expensive, and very risky idea.

ps I'm not a 'Brit'. I'm British, or more specifically English!

The latest episode of our
This Week in Privacy podcast was truly one of the best so far!

SO many interesting conversations about privacy news between @jonahJonah Aragon , @jwJordan Warne , and @kevphamKev .

I know I work there, but I still listen to it in my free time, as a fan (I'm not part of it).

I highly recommend privacyguides.org/livestreams/ :ablobcatheadphones:

AND there's another one streaming live today (Friday), starting at 9pm UTC (5pm EDT)!

We also have a RSS feed and federated Castopod instance for it here: fm.neat.tube/@thisweekinprivacy

“We don’t need any other country – whether from the region or outside the region – to come and rule us. That is unacceptable. Replacing an Israeli occupation with another foreign rule is not acceptable.”

“To think and speak of bringing foreign troops to Palestine … and have them take over the responsibility is not the solution.”

this kind of thing but also being combined with "oh wait, you like, were a toddler when this was going on in the industry" has really upped the social complexity in my brain lately. getting older means I can't assume the same shared history like i used to (not that I *could* before but I did)

One of my favorite things about moving to this part of the world is exposure to Mexican and Peruvian foods.

Both cuisines are amazing. This week I tried ‘tacu tacu’ for the first time. I didn’t know you could improve on rice and beans, which are already amazing.

It feels like it's been a while since I shared one of my own images. I've been feeling very adverse to editing with no new images to share. But, it's so, I have one that fits today!

This is the second waterfall I shot while starting to learn back in 2019. It was a favourite for many many years too. This is the re-edit I did in 2024. It will eventually show on my website in an upcoming collection.

A waterfall trickles down a slopped granite face at the end of summer. The start of falls oranges can be seen in the drying moss that coats the granite rocks of the creek bed and sides of the falls. The lush temperate rainforest creates a green canopy above the waterfall, warm with sunlight. At the bottom, the colder river stream splits into two small falls making up the bottom highlight of the image.
