What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

I'm looking for a new fulltime job!

I'm a UI designer with 20 years experience, more recently a design engineer writing a lot of Swift and SwiftUI, and some React Native for good measure.

I'm usually at early stage startups or consulting (I'm in San Francisco), but amenable to corporate.

Trigger Warning: Last wishes

RE: mastodon.social/@appassionato/

@DarkOptimismShaun Chamberlin @stateofresearchstate

In the age to come I wonder if we shall return to a practice resembling this? I wanted cremation, but now I'm not so certain. I may prefer to fhave my body laid out with flowers in a lovely Grecian ceremonial robe. Nothing elaborate. And then I wish to be left for the animals and insects. I expect to be in the Elysian Fields, but my body should be returned to Great Gaea Herself, to Mother Athena in that way.

✨ Meet Shrinivass, a Sr Full Stack Engineer from USA, contributing for over a year—improving docs like :has() and DOMContentLoaded.

He says, “I contribute because it’s mentorship at scale. Each improvement helps thousands of devs.”

Huge thanks! 🙌

Apparently I'm going to have some articles, screencasts, and curriculum to update after 3.15 is released! 😅

Python SC accepted PEP 798

PEP: peps.python.org/pep-0798/

Acceptance: discuss.python.org/t/pep-798-u

So this:
[*row for row in list_of_lists]

Will do the same thing as this:
[x for row in list_of_lists for x in row]

I often tell new learners that there are 4-ish uses of * and 3 uses of **. That'll now be 5-ish uses of * and 4 uses of **.

Sysadmin grump of the day: if a project has an announcements mailing list, is it too much to ask that they announce *every* release there? I am looking at you specifically, Prometheus, where I just discovered two recent project releases from the download page.

(... since they're on the download page it's not like the releases aren't considered "fully ready" yet.)

The issue is now fixed, prior to the v4.5 release: bolha.one/@cadusilva/115485894

One of the devs replied to the discussion I started in the Mastodon repo: github.com/mastodon/mastodon/d

Mastodon 4.5 is set to launch this week and there's something you should know:

All you need to quote a toot on Mastodon is to paste the link of said toot. Or, of course, you can use the boost button and select "Quote".

But pasting a link also works, automatically. If the author is on Mastodon and allows quotes, the toot will appear in the compose field but can be detached. If not, it'll be just a simple, plain link.

In the end, both paths lead to the same destination: to quote a toot. And, if the author allows quotes, this will generate a notification to them.

So it's important to know that this also works with private mentions, aka DMs.

Even if you don't mention the author's profile (user@instance.tld), if you simply paste a link to their post, and they allow quotes, they will be notified.

If they don't allow quotes, it'll be just a simple and plain link, and no notification will be sent to them.

So be careful not to end up mentioning someone in a DM without the intention of doing so.

They'll be able to see the DM content where the link was pasted, as if you'd have mentioned them explicitly. But it was just a quoted toot.

Let's see what they say about this: github.com/mastodon/mastodon/d

bolha.one/@cadusilva/115481273 uhh, please be careful, if you DM someone a quote-postable post link mastodon 4.5 will notify the person whose post it is. seems like a potential major user safety risk.

please boost this

i made an oopsie and accidentally purged ALL data from my server with no way to recover it. psilocybin.party is still here albeit with a bit of a different theme

if you followed @ovvie@psilocybin.party, feel free to re-follow me on here.

if you don't know me: i'm just a queer guy who now got into rhythm games. i draw, i play non-rhythm games, i don't have much to say as i don't work in any industry nor have specialized education.

i post random stuff, gaming stuff, shitposts, vents/rants and once in a blue moon a somewhat serious post about society from a disabled, trans, varsex and immigrant perspective

any enemies of my past reincarnations need not apply, just block and move on with your day

if that wall of text doesnt convince you to boost this; then consider the cat

Hello Fediverse -- let's have an and introduce ourselves :3

We're dotmeow, a queer-run community project to register the gTLD .meow. But not only for meows and giggles! The profits of this gTLD shall go to community causes, turning every domain into queer community support, especially focusing on trans issues.

While we've already passed the ICANN Application Support Program, we're just now launching our web & social media presence(s). So while there's not much to see here yet, follow us if you're interested in registering a .meow domain and potentially supporting us in the way -- crowdfunding TBA soon.

Outside of announcements we want to engage with the fediverse as regular fedizens and won't spam you with meaningless ads <3

In other news, I was let go on Thursday (startup ran out of cash), and am now looking for my next thing! I’ve got 20+ years of experience across the board from Apple Platform development/Server-side Swift, to HTML/CSS/JS/TS/React/Node, and am confident I can be productive in any environment!

I'm open to Full-Time or Contract, and despite being US based, have EU and Asia-friendly work hours, though remote is my only requirement.
