What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

@fasterthanlimeamos as a followup, things that are complicated
- lockable units aren't atomic but mixed together with other units across a couple of folders. `-Zbuild-dir-new-layout` exists for changing this but will be a big transition because parts of the ecosystem depend on the layout. `build-dir` itself was a first step to help identify these cases.
- file handle limits makes grabbing locks per unit to be annoying
- with build pipelining (once rmeta is generated, dependents can build in parallel to rlib generation), locking for a build unit isn't just "read XOR write" because we need to do both
- some build units may get mutated by different builds so it can be tricky to track when we can concurrently read or not

We've been discovering and working through these issues in another PR that does change `build-dir` layout, see github.com/rust-lang/cargo/pul

Hey, my first post here on Mastodon! Allow me to introduce myself! I am a hobbyist LEGO stop motion animator and aspiring storyteller! I like good stories focused on original concept as well as great stories around already established franchises (Sonic, etc.).

I hope to gain some traction on this new platform, and some new attention and feedback on my work as a whole!

If you want as close to an A/B test in misogyny in industry as you can get, talk to trans women. Legit the same exact person before and after, and many many of us watch our careers stall out. I've seen my raises and bonuses halt entirely for the last 5 years while team members get raises and bonuses. I had a great grand boss directly interfering with my work and bashing my communication styles when I asked many of my colleagues and they said they saw nothing different in how I communicated than a great many of my men colleagues.

Now I daily consider how much longer I'll make it in tech.

Hey everyone! Codeberg will go down for about 10 minutes starting 19.00 UTC (20.00 CET) to create database indices which are expected to improve performance. This requires a short interruption of service.

We apologize for the inconvenience and short notice.

I need a web app where an admin can upload files and anonymous users can then download it. It should be dead simple and the only important feature would be folders. Of course it must run on ;). I tried Filegator but it throws weird fatal errors. Any ideas for such a small web app?

I've finished work on a couple of things for : implementations of nga in javascript (node), java, kotlin, and haskell. The haskell one is the most interesting I think, though not a good example of Haskell code since this is the first thing I've actually written in it.

The code is in the tree at brew.bsd.cafe/crc/retroforth/s or git.sr.ht/~crc_/retroforth/tre

I'm honored to be named a @ThePSFPython Software Foundation fellow🐍
This reflects work I started in 2018 at @pyOpenSci —creating inclusive pathways for scientists to spend less time fighting with their code and more time solving the challenges that matter.

None of this happens alone. To everyone who's participated in our peer review process, contributed to our guidebooks, supported our beginner-friendly sprints, or helped welcome new community members—thank you.

i see a lot of people expressing sadness over colorForth being gone. i'm quite okay with it: from Chuck Moore's webpage you can see that its primary utility in the last 20 years or so (if not more) was patent trolling, and while not being able to run the software won't stop that, it's a small bit of satisfaction.

Prompted by both a tragic study on personality phrenology I saw today and by my current book revisions, I have a question

Where have you seen "individual" explanations given for software development outcomes when the REAL driver was group work?

E.g., heroes get the credit when the thing was really a team effort? Or people thinking your best skill is coding fast alone when really it's about collaboration? Any stories like that would be welcome as I chew on this
