My friend seems genuinely baffled that I am an AI researcher who refuses to use AI! Not only that, but I argue against it from theory, not experience. Why don't I just give it a try for a while, and see what it's really about before I judge it?

I guess I see where he's coming from. Part of the problem is the word "AI." LLMs are not my research focus, so it's less of a contradiction than it sounds. But I admit, being a non-user makes my arguments against LLMs less credible.

I just don't understand why I owe it to anybody to give AI a shot. I know how LLMs work in gory detail, and I don't trust them. I've seen the mediocre work they produce. I've read studies about the seductive illusion of competence and caring they create, and how people fall for that. I know it's all built on an incredibly exploitative business model.

I feel entirely justified in not giving them a chance. I guess I'm just as baffled by how badly he wants me to try it, and how sure he seems to be that it would change my mind.

지저분한 이야기이긴 한데, 군대 훈련소에 들어가면 처음 1주? 2주는 대변을 제대로 보기 힘듭니다. 음식이 문제라기 보다는 환경에 급격한 변화로 몸이 잔뜩 긴장해서 제대로 장활동이 일을 안한다. 라고 보시면 될 것 같은데, 그래서인지, 주말에는 우리가 군대리아라고 부르는 햄버거와 우유가 식단에 포함되었죠. 이건 과학적인 식단 편성이라기 보다는, 경험이 누적되어 완성된 식품 엔지니어링이라고 생각하는데요(...) 그럼에도 불구하고 힘든 친구들은 정말 고생을 많이 했습니다.

In the West Bank, record levels of Israeli settler violence against Palestinians are unfolding with little mainstream coverage. The few journalists who try to report on it often face attacks themselves.

When the violence is covered, the settlers are often framed as fringe actors, despite clear backing from the Israeli state.

今のところ一番身近で一番人が居る人間生成コンテンツってSNSだと思うんだけど、近い未来、SNSからもそれが失われていかないかちょっと不安になった。みんな自分の趣味趣向と興味があることなんかをAIに保存して自分のbotにアカウントを管理させるようになっちゃったりして、ちょっといい感じのpostを生成させて適度にバズらせて小銭を稼いだりとかして。いつだったかTwitterで「俺だけが人間としてツイートしててTLの他のツイートは全部自動botとかなんじゃないのか」とボヤいた人がいたけどそういう未来がすぐそこにまで来ているのかもしれない。

Vibe coders are learning. Writing code was never that hard.

For sure, coding starts hard, but it's a hard that gets easier with exercise, like any other exercise.

Figuring out what people need & solving that need. Now that's hard. Irreducibly hard. It never really gets that much easier.

Your favorite LLM, though, can't exercise anything. It doesn't even really know anything. At least not in the sense of the way we say that we know things.

TIL how to stop logfire from spamming the console when instrumenting : set `min_log_level` in logfire.pydantic.dev/docs/refe.

1. `logfire.configure(token=LOGFIRE_TOKEN, environment=ENVIRONMENT, console=logfire.ConsoleOptions(min_log_level="warning”))`.
2. Call `logfire.instrument_sqlite3()`.
3. Bask in the radiant glow of a blank screen that is not filled with "BEGIN”, “SELECT”, "COMMIT" over and over again.
