While I'm thinking about work, a piece of advice for startups thinking about security: fix your project management and roadmapping process before/at the same time as bringing someone in to help with security, especially if that person is not getting put in as a peer to the CTO with the swing to force stuff onto the roadmap.

When I come in as a fractional CISO, I am almost always the first stakeholder with significant engineering requirements that are not coming from the product roadmap. In most cases, there is not yet a clear way for the organization to make decisions about what to do with competing priorities that lives outside of the head of the product owner. This means that even generally agreed high priority work — on the level of "perhaps we should consider backing up the production data without which the entire business is gone" — struggles to get done in the face of this quarter's feature plan.

Talking about this in my kickoff meetings and getting very explicit commitments from the executive team early on as to how they want me to proceed with decision-making helps a little. The only places I've seen where it hasn't been a problem are all companies that have been able to hire their way out of it. "Wow, doing that security infrastructure work would take like 20% of our entire engineer team for two years. I guess we better grow the engineering team by 20% and dedicate those people to security work." While great for me when I get to work with those teams, this is not a general solution to the problem.

We (SCI Semiconductor) are about to hire some folks in the next couple of months (probably starting in January, since we're about to hit Christmas):

We're aiming to hire 1-3 FAEs, who can build out the open-source bits of the software stack (including drivers / various communication stacks), build demos, and work with customers on use-case bringup.

We also want to hire someone else on the toolchain side. Primarily + , but also working with our (and ) folks.

Let me know if you're interested!

EDIT: We are a full-remote company. It's easiest for us to hire people in the UK (and one of our investors would really like us to hire more people in Sheffield), but elsewhere is possible (though might, for tax purposes, require you to be officially a contractor for a while).

We're also going to be hiring people for our hardware verification and RTL teams soon (more on the verification side than design at the moment, I think). I'm not responsible for them, but I can find out more details if anyone is interested. Our first CHERIoT chip is nearly finished, we're starting to work on the second.

EDIT 2: Thanks to all of the people who have expressed interest (in public and private posts). I'll try to get back to you all next week!

This fox is a little… different. 😳Meet the Tibetan fox (Vulpes ferrilata), which is distinguished by its characteristic flattened face. This species can be found in parts of Asia, including China, India, and Nepal—and has been observed at elevations of up to 17,388 ft (5,300 m). It has a thick layer of fur to help it survive the cold, windy grasslands it inhabits.

Image Description
A photo of a Tibetan Fox taken from slightly above. The fox is looking back toward the viewer. It has a thick coat of auburn fur, with a lighter-colored underbelly and dark grayish markings on its flanks and tail. It has a wide face.

The Tibetan fox preys on birds and small mammals like the pika. It's even been observed trailing bears as they dig their dens, waiting to catch pikas fleeing their underground hiding places.
