Gun Ring, New York, 2024
‘This image,’ says Samoylova, ‘was taken at Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade, an event steeped in civic history. What first caught my eye was this woman’s hand resting against a flag-patterned shawl, piled with beaded bracelets and a rhinestone pistol ring. The gesture felt small, yet it opened up a larger conversation about patriotism, personal style and the presence of gun culture in everyday life’

"No one colonizes innocently, no one colonizes with impunity either; a nation which colonizes, a civilization which justifies colonization and therefore force, is already a sick civilization, a civilization which is morally diseased."

—Aimé Césaire, Discourse on Colonialism

In recognition of the Day of Mourning that the United American Indians declared on this day in 1970, and in hopes of offering important context to colonial mythology about early Thanksgivings, we offer the story of Metacomet’s War:

I still find it a little weird that one of my favourite live videos this year is by a Japanese idol band.

Although RAY are definitely the most interesting one (their album "White" this year is really good), and there is quite a bit of Japanese math rock royalty on stage here. 😊

In case you haven’t heard, Sutter Health decided to throw trans kids under the bus on the friday before the thanksgiving week, the day after TDoR; if you happen to have a linkedin account, maybe let them know what you think about this by liking and supporting Rainbow Families Action’s comment in the replies here:

The experience @Violinknitter describes here is deeply familiar to me: advertisers keep shoving in front of me ads in which I have •negative• interest.

Does the massive adtech surveillance apparatus actually work on someone out there? Because it’s sure failing to target me. wandering.shop/@Violinknitter/

@inthehandsPaul Cantrell @Violinknitter I worked for one of the email coupon companies with delusions of grandeur many years back.

For unimportant reasons, we failed to personalize the coupons in our campaigns for a few weeks, falling back to a random selection to each recipient. After we fixed the integration bug, we treated it as a natural experiment of the efficacy of our personalization ml algorithm.

It was negative. Definitively. Random selection handily outperformed all the expensive personalization.
