The lawmakers that advocate for things like age verification and under [insert age here] social media bans are doing so for essentially the same reason Christian Nationalists advocate home schooling.

They want to shield children from external influences that can dilute the effectiveness of their fascist brainwashing. They hate an educated populace that can think for themselves.

Don't buy any moral panic slop they try to push and contact your representatives to tell them you don't want any of it.

Thoughts and Prayers is an HBO documentary about “the impact of the $3 billion active shooter preparedness industry on schools and communities across America”. It’s completely sickening that we choose to live this way in America. kottke.org/25/11/thoughts-and-

Every dollar you spend at a corporate monolith is a dollar extracted from your community. It’s a vote for a world where Main Street looks like a ghost town and your social media feed is just ads instead of fun.

But every dollar you spend at a small business? That’s a dollar going toward someone’s rent. For the barista’s poetry habit or the cartoonist’s art supply. It’s a dollar that says, "I’d rather live in a world where people thrive than where billionaires buy themselves another yacht."

Best advice on buying local is to not let the perfect be the enemy of the good. If you just shift some percentage of your purchasing to local, that's a positive change.

Use local bookstores. Perhaps kitchen products? Hardware stores. Sports equipment and clothing. Tackle the easy ones first.

If it costs 10% more than at the big box store consider it a donation to your community.

Black Friday isn’t a holiday, it’s a heist. A glittery, discount-code-waving distraction where billionaires convince you that buying a $12 toaster you don’t need is a victory.

Spoiler: The only people winning are the ones who already have more money than God.

Jeff Bezos doesn’t need your $12. But the local bookstore? Your favorite indie artist? The weird little shop down the street that sells handmade candles that smell like a vacation in Scandinavia? They do.

Chat Control is back, but slightly changed:

❌ No backdoor of encryption
❌ No forced scanning
🚨 But: Age verification (no anonymity)

The update just quietly passed in the EU Council & now needs to be discussed with the EU Parliament.

👁️Big Techs like and will continue to scan your data.

Will you keep fighting against ?

This year, instead of making a Thanksgiving dinner at home, we went to the Salvation Army, to serve a meal to families staying at the shelter.

Besides our family, there was a couple there, who seemed very nice. Guy and his wife, around 40, I’d guess.

Waiting to clean up after dinner, the guy tells me that the United States is the only country in the world with an entire holiday dedicated to gratitude. “One of the things that makes us the greatest country in the world,” he added.

I could have said nothing. Could have smiled and nodded and kept things agreeable.

But I thought I caught a whiff of something below the surface.

So I told him that Canada has their own Thanksgiving in October. Same basic thing. Harvest celebration.

Not a real country, he replied. Going to be the 51st state anyway.

Wife gave him a look: Not here. Not today.

But he was clearly ready to launch, and you could tell that his wife’s request for self-restraint wasn’t going over well.
