やっぱり…:blobcatmeow_teary_eyed:

Buckley: The Life and the Revolution That Changed America by Sam Tanenhaus, 2025

A deep investigation into the vast and often hidden universe of Bill Buckley and the modern conservative revolution.
Buckley vividly captures its subject in all his facets and phases: founding editor of National Review, the twentieth century’s most influential political journal; syndicated columnist, Emmy-winning TV debater, and bestselling spy novelist.

...; ally of Joseph McCarthy and Barry Goldwater; mentor to Ronald Reagan; game-changing candidate for mayor of New York.

Tanenhaus also has uncovered the darker trail of Bill Buckley’s secret exploits, including CIA missions in Latin America, dark collusions with Watergate felon Howard Hunt, and Buckley’s struggle in his last years to hold together a movement coming apart over the AIDS epidemic, culture wars, and the invasion of Iraq—even as his own media empire was unraveling.
At a crucial moment in American history, Buckley offers a gripping and powerfully relevant story about the birth of modern politics and those who shaped it.

in that sense i felt useful because i have enough technical taste to judge and nudge the ongoing process. there are many different ways it could’ve gone. having taste (i.e. experience) is useful now but maybe AI will be good at this too in the future

i don't think comparing website size to the apollo guidance computer program memory size is fair or meaningful

the AGC was doing trajectory calculations (something that is quite easy to build a computer for).

the website is putting raster images on a high-resolution screen (something that is significantly harder to build a computer for, and also not a concern whatsoever for people going to the moon in the 70s).

The “Door to Hell” or Darvaza Gas Crater, located in Karakum Desert of Turkmenistan 🇹🇲. It’s a massive, fiery pit 70m wide and 30m deep, which has been burning continuously since 1971.

The crater was formed when Soviet geologists drilling for natural gas accidentally caused ground to collapse, releasing methane gas. To prevent spread of toxic gas, they set it ablaze, expecting it to burn out in a few days. However, fire has persisted for over five decades due to vast underground gas reserves.
