I refuse
As a queer person, I sometimes think about cis straight people I know back home (Singapore) who truly think I had no reason to leave home. Even though my country doesn't recognize my marriage, even though there are no immigration benefits that accrue to my foreign same sex spouse, even though there are no anti-discrimination laws that exist to protect me, they think, I can still have a pretty good life as an out queer person. I can have money, and no one is actively wanting to beat me up or hurt me.
That's the problem.
The problem isn't the bigots (because at least I know what to expect), it's the people who think they are not bigots, who believe that I should be thankful and grateful because 'at least nobody is going to beat me up'.
Nobody will beat me up because I have middle class Chinese and cis privilege in that society. It's not the same for other people. It's not because I am accepted or tolerated. Also, that is a tremendously low bar. I expect more of my life. I expect to thrive, not just be grateful to survive.

Out of Index 2025 방문을 위해 동대문역사문화공원 근처에 가게 되었는데, 이 근처에 러시아와 중앙아시아 지역의 식당이 여럿 있다는 이야기를 듣고 한 끼를 여기서 먹어보기로 하였습니다. 가게가 여럿 있었는데, 대기가 없고 혼자 먹어도 될 것 같은 가게를 골랐습니다.
중앙아시아 요리에 어떤 메뉴가 있는지 잘 몰랐기 때문에, 그냥 감으로 국물요리 중 메뉴 맨 앞에 있는 것, 무난할 것 같은 밥 메뉴, 그리고 이름을 들어본 적 있는 요리인 샤슬릭을 골랐습니다.
슈르파는 반쯤 투명한 국물에 기름이 뜬, 양고기와 당근, 감자가 들어간 스프였는데, 꽤 무난한 맛이 났습니다. 날이 춥기도 하니 국물이 좋았는데, 어떤 국물이었는지는 기억이 희미하네요. 크게 썬 감자를 잘라 먹는 것이 맛있었습니다.
플로프는 볶음밥입니다. 중국식이나 태국식 볶음밥에 비하면 볶은 게 맞나? 싶을 정도로 그냥 인디카 쌀로 된 밥에 향신료로 볶은 당근과 양파, 소고기가 올라간 덮밥에 가까웠습니다. 향신료를 전제로 한 고기 냄새가 그렇게 익숙하지는 않았는데, 어쨌든 꽤 즐겁게 먹었습니다.
샤슬릭은 나올 때 20분정도 걸린다는 주의를 들었는데, 실제로 나머지 음식들을 거의 먹었을 때쯤 나왔습니다. 고기는 맛있지요. 최근에 양고기를 먹을 일이 있으면 다른 고기보다 양고기를 고르는 편인데, 양고기 맛이 나는 꼬치였습니다.
다음에 온다면 못 먹어본 요리를 더 먹어보고 싶습니다. 라그만이라거나 펠메니 같은 음식이 어떤 맛일지 궁금합니다.

After a week of mostly cold (for SE TX), wet, cloudy weather, the sun came out yesterday and with that I was surprised again to see some late season #butterflies, mostly #monarchs and long-tailed skippers, swarming the main blooming plant remaining in the front #garden, the mistflower. Made for this one brief encounter. Sharing is caring.
