Engelbart's demo is well worth checking out. SRI has a nice 5 minute highlight cut: youtube.com/watch?v=B6rKUf9DWRI

Xerox PARC developers cite him as a direct inspiration for the Xerox Star (toastytech.com/guis/star.html) and Alto, which in turn famously inspired Apple and Microsoft.

In the other direction, the chain goes to Vannevar Bush's Memex (history-computer.com/products/), and from there to early 20th century concepts such as Paul Otlet's Répertoire bibliographique universel: fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C3%A9p

If you are a highly stressful/anxious person who gets thrown off by external factors it is not anyone else's responsibility to deal with your stress/anxiety at work. Deal with your shit yourself and do not put it on any of your co-workers. I, for one, will just ignore you once you go off the deep end in chat or calls.

RE: fosstodon.org/@alextheuxguy/11

Ohmygoodness, this is such a delightful article from @alextheuxguyAlex White, full of so much Palm Pilot nostalgia.

I remember my father used his for years, and I even purchased a copy of the "Palm OS Programming Bible" in the hopes that I'd be able to write software for it when he bequeathed it to me (it died before I had a chance).

The personal digital assistant for a more civilized age.

my new static site generator has a TUI that lets you:
- flip between listening on localhost/LAN
- adjust tracing's filter level on the fly

oh also everything is querified (using salsa) + 19 other cool features, of course it's too early to post about it

..way too early! github.com/bearcove/dodeca

I wonder how @bagderdaniel:// stenberg:// feels about Microsoft mentioning curl at support.microsoft.com/en-us/to

This isn't really very spicy, and I'm not suggesting that Microsoft are trying to blame curl for Microsoft's previously-insufficient security controls. I knew curl shipped with Windows for quite a few years now, but I guess I hadn't realized (or had never considered) that Invoke-WebRequest is more or less a curl wrapper.

“Stairz”

I tried several shots of the Center, with various angles and longer or shorter exposures, and all of a sudden I saw these areas of color that stood out well from where I was (blue in the upper left, yellow in the lower left, red in the lower right), and I gave it a shot. I then enhanced the effect a bit in Lightroom, but the main thing came from the shot.

My main regret is that the staircase should be more centered, but there was if I remember correctly no color reminder further to the right, and cropping to center would reduce the colored areas on the left.

i owe my story almost exclusively to @calmudgeonCal Deobald ... in 1987, i spoke to "santa" (him and my mom) through the school computers on a lan using `talk` when i was 6.

then shareware games tossed between dad and my uncle, using pre-internet tools that were magic to me. 286 days.

then came the internet of the early 90s, which was slow and awful and i didn't quite get it. as a 10-year-old, i never understood why the win3.1 archie and veronica icons didn't open digital comic books. i wrote some c and basic on the 386 but the network didn't grab me yet.

then dad took a notion to start a "community network" — a local isp for our village, supported by the canadian government. my first exposure to free software was apache on windows nt 3.51 running in the school library, where all the modems were. when we got our first pentium 120, i started making websites.

the early web was raw and clumsy and magical and i miss it dearly.

I fixed the display glitch in the healthier HP35. Turns out I was browning it out! Longer numbers on the LED display require a lot more current. It's happy at 135 mA. It's difficult to capture in photos just how good these old displays look. Super crisp. The digits get a little blurred in photos, likely due to the high frequency PWM.

This first HP calculator has no built in self test, but manual tests suggest it's fully working. 🎉

The water damaged one, not so much.

An early 1970s HP35 calculator showing the value of pi in sharp red light.

Reading about these displays, it's remarkable how much better LEDs have gotten since 1970. If I put 400 mW into modern LEDs of this size, it'd be blinding.

Whereas these little fellers are just doing their darnedest to be visible in normal indoor lighting.

They still look great though.

Poland to launch construction of first #nuclear plant after EU approves €14bn in state aid

Construction of Poland’s first nuclear power plant is now set to begin after the European Commission approved Warsaw’s request to allocate 60 billion zloty (€14.2 billion) in state aid for the project.

The decision, which had been widely expected, was welcomed by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who told a cabinet meeting that it means “construction will be able to start immediately”, as early as this month.

Ahoy peeps… let’s try this again:

I’m mainly a programmer and looking for work in Linz (or remote anywhere else, duh)

so far the traditional job market has rejected me - not just as programmer, but also as train driver, supermarket shelf stacker (yes really), data management and more. god only knows why (points at transgender flag) I simply have no idea (keeps pointing)

I’m part of a “startup” where I get some money from, but starting january I can easily work full-time somewhere else at the same time.

I can't believe Ashley and I are literally both writing pieces about gender barriers and beliefs about programming ability right now. Really cool. At the same time sort of sad and maddening how continuously necessary it all is. But also really cool. You can have two completely different PhDs and research areas and the world somewhat inevitably pushes you toward the same issues if you're a person who decides to care and pay attention over your career.
